Did You Know? Queen Isabella, Pawnshops, and the Discovery of America History often shows us how pivotal moments are tied to resourceful solutions. One such story revolves around Queen Isabella of Castile, who almost pawned her crown jewels to fund Christopher Columbus' journey to the New World in 1492. While the jewels were never ultimately pawned, her statement, “I will assume the undertaking for my own crown of Castile, and am ready to pawn my jewels to defray the expenses of it”, demonstrates the critical role of collateralized lending in moments of historical significance .During her reign, pawnbroking wasn’t just a financial option—it was a vital tool for rulers and commoners alike. Kings, queens, and even warriors like Alexander the Great are said to have relied on pawnshops in Europe to finance their campaigns, leaving behind prized items like jewelry or weapons for much-needed funds. These establishments were the banks of their time, providing liquidity during emergencies The Legacy of Pawnbroking in Latino Communities This historical connection to pawnbroking resonates deeply with Latino communities today. For many families, pawnshops provide an accessible alternative to traditional banking systems, offering immediate solutions in times of financial need. From jewelry to sentimental possessions, items of value are often exchanged for the resources to overcome life’s challenges. The spirit of Queen Isabella’s resourcefulness mirrors the resilience of many Latinos who see pawnshops not just as businesses, but as trusted partners. This is especially true for communities underserved by mainstream financial institutions, where pawnshops fill the gap by offering fairness and reliability.

At Merchants & Marine Bancorp, Inc., we continue to follow the path less taken. Most banks focus exclusively on growth, sales, and acquisitions, with many forgetting that behind each of these pursuits lie countless interactions of both internal and external clients. Clients who deserve to have their needs and preferences considered as a part of the design of the ecosystem they’re operating in. Unfortunately, this misplaced focus by leaders produces frustration among team members, diminished client satisfaction, and reduced efficiency & long-term profitability for the banks themselves. With this (and our teams, our clients, and our growing Family of Brands) in mind, we launched Community of Resources (COR). COR will help sustain a client-centric approach in our operational, finance, bank services and risk management lines of business within our Company as we continue to grow and expand our Family of Brands. COR is led by a team of highly capable and highly experienced bankers who are focused on creating better experiences for both internal and external clients. As best I can tell, COR represents one of the first new “Bank Services Companies” that has launched in quite some time. And, that’s even more true of BSC firms launched by banks. We have big plans and even bigger hopes for COR and the impact it will have on not only on our Family of Brands, but on community banks throughout our region. Here’s to continuing to follow the path less taken in pursuit of building stronger communities and brighter futures!
Welcome to the Community of Resources (COR) LinkedIn page! We are thrilled to present our brand and showcase our team members through social media. COR was created as a division of Merchants & Marine Bancorp, Inc., to support the expanding family of brands. We are a brand driven by a passion for developing new talent, delivering exceptional service, and driving operational excellence.
