Associate Head of School | Senior Lecturer in Educational Leadership | EdD Candidate researching Military to Civilian Transition | SFHEA | Disruptive | Working hard everyday to not take anything personally
Sunday morning epiphany! As educators, there can be a tendency for us to bemoan ‘the system’ and query what we mean by the term ‘education’ as if changing both is central to solving their respective ills. I state this from a position of having engaged in such narratives for many years. The problem with the narratives described is that they serve little by way of pragmatic purpose. Such discussions merely breed resentment and cultivate self-fulfilling prophecies . Therefore, instead, learning, knowing and working the system and expanding our respective circles of influence might be the keys to unlocking meaningful development. We need our educators - in HE or otherwise - to understand what they are up against and adopt the values that are conducive to student-centricity (credit Stuart Noss for prompting that though process). In the words attributed to Gene Kranz: ‘Let's work the problem…’ #development #education

I’ve been reflecting (see previous post)… Understanding our students in HE isn’t about knowing what they had for dinner or where they are going on holiday! Instead, it’s about appreciating the context of their respective journeys – the social, cultural and systemic experiences that they’ve encountered. Being awake to the nuances of individual experiences aids the relational nature of educating others and - to be blunt - demonstrates that lecturers give a xxxx about those that they are working with. #education #students #experience **edited to correct my typos**

Are you interested in a rewarding new career using your life experience to help young people understand different religious and non-religious worldviews? Schools across the country are looking for professionals and career changers to bring their experience of the world to the classroom as a religious education teacher. You’ll be running debates and discussions on some of the major issues of our time, and helping young people evaluate and understand not just their own beliefs but those of others, while giving them vital preparation for life in their own community and the world beyond. There’s a £10,000 bursary to help you train and support to help you find the right role - with flexible full time and part time options in a range of locations. What’s it like teaching the subject? Bev, a career changer, decided to enter the classroom in search of doing something ‘completely different’ with her life. “There is a misconception that RE is about trying to get students to believe in certain things, when actually you’re trying to get them to understand different religious and non-religious beliefs in response to life’s big questions. In the classroom, I’m opening minds, not closing them. “In Year 7 we look at what happens when we die, and the ideas different religions have about the nature of the soul. In Year 8 we look at the lived experiences of people who go on pilgrimage, which helps young people grapple with the complexity of modern belief. In year 11, we look at topics such as euthanasia and ‘just’ war.” Are you interested in finding out more about a challenging and rewarding career in RE teaching? Or would you like to speak to someone who can offer advice on taking your first steps into the classroom? COUNTDOWN TO GRADUATION 2024! Anna Pelosi ’24 For the next few weeks, we are celebrating our graduating history majors, what they’ve accomplished at Denison University, and what they are planning as their next steps. Please help us congratulate them! 🔹 Anna, what did you explore in your history senior seminar research project last fall? My senior seminar project was “Cult as Case Study: Observing American Cultural Modalities of the US through Media Coverage of Rajneeshpuram.” I explored a shift in cultural perspective in the US from new-age orientalism to Reagan-era individualism, capitalism, and isolation, using the media coverage of the Rajneeshpuram cult spanning the three decades of its largest activity, the 60s, 70s and 80s. This topic built on my interests in cold war history and media bias. 🔹 What is one of your favorite learning moments as a history major that has really stuck with you and/or changed how you think? I’ve found that all of my argumentative history essays have helped me grow in my academic and communication-related self-confidence. Being able to articulate a well-crafted argument based on my own research has increased my skills of self-advocacy through my four years of study. I would especially like to thank Dr. Adrian Young for his guidance with my senior research and writing! History also aids in my Educational Studies classes and major by adding different cultural contexts and perspectives. 🔹 What are some other experiences that have shaped your time at Denison? I am a double major in Educational Studies, with a focus on disability studies and critical pedagogies. I’m also an active member of the women's rugby team, which has been a super fun way of connecting with my peers across different majors in a non-varsity sport. 🔹 And where do you go from here? My current plans post-graduation are to obtain a Master’s of Science in communication disorders and later become a speech pathologist, to help students and adults with differences improve on effective communication. Next year I’ll be shadowing working speech-language pathologists and applying to graduate programs. #DUhistory #historymatters #graduation #denisonprou
