🏋🏻 HIIT vs. Cardio: The Workout Debate 🏃♀️ What type of exercise should you do? Spoiler alert = all of them (and especially exercise you enjoy)! Cardio boosts heart health, strength training builds muscles and bone density, while flexibility exercises enhance mobility and reduce injury risk. Incorporating all three promotes overall fitness, ensuring a well-rounded and resilient body. But – how should you work your cardiovascular system? 🔍 A 2014 research study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine compared High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with traditional cardio (Moderate-Intensity Continuous Training, MICT). 📊 Findings: HIIT significantly increases cardiorespiratory fitness by almost double compared to MICT in patients with lifestyle-induced chronic diseases. Part of my annual health tracking protocols is a Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) more commonly known a a #VO2max test. I’ve performed these at several locations, the latest by the University of Virginia Research. A common treadmill stress test is very informative for most people but they don’t place adequate stress on the heart for athletes and fit people. The CPET is a test to failure test - you go as long as you can push yourself while the load steadily increases due to rising incline of the treadmill. The test captures O2/CO2 exchange rates that change as workload increases. It also measures heart function via ECG. It’s all fed into a computer that, along with speed, incline, and body mass, tracks cardiovascular fitness during running and during recovery. It also assesses fat burning efficiency. All this requires a medical team of four! The test itself takes about 20-25 minutes depending on when you cry “uncle.” The more for you are, the longer the test. VO2max declines naturally with age, along with several molecules the body produces. As with any science-based approach to slow aging and extend healthspan, the goal is to maintain levels of our body’s chemistry, along with muscle mass and mitochondria. VO2max is also one of the strongest non-genetic predictors of life expectancy as it aligns with the simplest of all predictors of longevity - the healthier we are today, the longer we’re expected to be able to continue doing the things we love. While VO2 declines, that doesn’t mean it can’t be improved. Already in the top 1% of VO2 for my age and sex, it was up four points over my best VO2 in four years. I have to go back over 15 years to when I was in my forties to get a higher score. Health is never static and there’s always more available. We all have untapped capacity that could be helping us live better today, and also worth more than a decade of extra #healthspan. But it isn’t going to find us - we have to go after it every day and discover how much more fun that world is than the one we left behind. I did it in my forties, but it can happen at every age.

Weight-loss Medicine Is Huge Now – But What’s The Next Health Obsession - Exercise Pills? If there were a pill that could be taken, rather than going for a run, or some other workout, would you consider taking it? Weight-loss pills and injections are all the rage now; so much so, that some adults who need it, are unable to access the medicine, given the short supplies. If there was a pill that gave you the same effects as taking part in regular exercise, would you be tempted to take it? I would, when I am older, much older, if it were affordable and available to everyone. So, this ‘new’ exercise pill, or tablet, could one day be ‘a thing.’ According to Science Alert, Scientists in the U.S. claim to have deciphered a way to include some of the health benefits of exercise into a tablet or pill. Wow! This is absolutely amazing. In initial tests on rodents, the new medicine appears to tap into the natural metabolic pathways, associated with exercise. It reads, ‘When ministered to mice daily, the drug called SLU-PP-332, seems to improve muscle function, fitness, and endurance – all without the animals having to move more than they’re used to.’ If the same results occur in Human trials, the new drug could help those with neurodegenerative diseases, and, heart failure. This medicine improves endurance, with the mice running on treadmills (amusing mental picture there!) for 70% longer, and, 45% further, than those not receiving the drug. The mice on this trial therapy also gained less fat over the period of one month, than those not given SLU-PP-332. The new drug effected the mice as if they were exercising fasted, so they therefore lost weight. For people who physically are unable to exercise, this possible new medication may help to prevent weight-gain and diseases.
