I left academia following my master’s research, though I’d been asked to stay on and complete a PhD so the article below resonates with me.
As Prof. Mintzberg is chair of a management faculty, the article he and Susan Mintzberg, PhD candidate, penned, broaches topics my MBA cohort can relate to as well.
From the article:
“ (…) a manager cannot be created in a classroom. Management has to be learned initially on the job, much like swimming has to be learned in the water.”
I’d nuance that a classroom opens our minds to many topics and gives us the opportunity to deep dive those that interest us further.
It also connects us with interesting, diverse individuals that yet have similar aspirations (the degree in question).
But just as I’m willing to bet not all CEOs and senior executives had perfect GPAs in school, having an MBA is not the measure of a great manager or leader.
How many people are willing to follow you?
How do you work everyday to remove roadblocks for your teams?
How many leaders are you in turn creating?
How are you advocating for yourself and your team?
How broad is your circle of influence?
