Anyone can achieve great things. Today is International Day of Acceptance, a yearly celebration of inclusion and awareness which began when Annie Hopkins passed away in 2009. It celebrates acceptance and promotes equality for people living with disability. Despite living with spinal muscular atrophy, both Annie and her brother overcame barriers and succeeded in going to university and co-founding a business together, 3E Love. Annie created the wheelchair heart logo to hide the wheels and show a person is not defined by their disability. The company founded by Annie and Stevie, 3E Love, stands for three things that everyone can benefit from: Embrace diversity. Educate your community. What does it mean to be an ally? An ally is someone who supports the cause of a minority group, without actually being in the group. They use their privilege to amplify the cause of the group. Throughout my journey to educate others about disability, I speak a lot about being a better ally for people with disabilities, and how it is the best way to strive for more of an inclusive world. It may be a difficult concept to grasp, but I can assure you that it’s much more simple than it sounds. In this post, I have written about some of the key characteristics of a good ally, with the hope that you can adopt them easily. I have also used a range of resources to write this post, so there is a bibliography at the end to reference them.
