🚨🚨Real-time fraud update🚨🚨 Last week, our expert takedown team responded to a bad actor abusing URL-shortening services. They aimed to obfuscate the link to a fraudulent sign-in page impersonating one of our customers. 👀URL shortening takes normal-length links and converts them into links that are shorter and easier to manage. Some popular examples of link shorteners are Bit.ly and TinyURL. Scammers have been abusing link-shortening services for quite some time now, likely not long after TinyURL’s launch in 2002. 🛡️Link-shortening companies are aware of this and have taken steps to prevent abuse. Trust and safety teams, link checking to view the destination of shortened links without visiting the site itself, and abuse reporting forms are some of the measures taken to prevent link-shortening abuse. 😪To get around the guardrails, fraudsters have begun exploring alternative options - including creating their own link-shortening services. 🛡️For brands looking to protect themselves from obfuscated links, it starts with educating customers, employees, and members not to trust any shortened links, and to approach them with caution. Try to stay away from using shortened links as a brand, since it may lead to familiarization in the minds of your members or employees.
