CBAM (the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism), which kicked off in 2023, currently covers a limited group of sectors but will quickly expand its reach. The initial group includes carbon-intensive industries deemed most at risk of moving production from the EU to regions with less stringent carbon regulation, also known as carbon leakage. Explore the topic further in our second article in the series on CBAM “Double Edged: 5 steps to comply with CBAM and add strategic value”: https://lnkd.in/dZcNtgUU #CBAM #CarbonTax #CarbonReporting David Neilson, Richard Betts, Clive Abel, Alex Kauffmann

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism #CBAM The EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) ensures that imported goods pay the same carbon price as those produced within the EU, encouraging cleaner production worldwide. This tool aims to prevent undermining the EU's climate goals by equalizing carbon costs for imports and domestic products. CBAM will be fully implemented in 2026, with a transitional phase from 2023 to 2025, aligning with the phase-out of free allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) to help EU industries decarbonize. #carbon #price #Emission #control #initiatives

Are you familiar with CBAM? The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a new regulation that requires companies to report their greenhouse gas emissions when importing carbon-intensive products into the European market. In a recent webinar, Dr. Rajesh Singh and Johannes Gediga shared their insights on how CBAM affects companies and how to prepare for it. Some words on data: The CBAM default data in the public report is provided to "virtually enable CBAM but in a way punish" organizations that do not have suitable data of their own operations and supply chain. Another benefit of having actual data available in foreground and background, because publicly available default data is most cases "worst case data" to avoid greenwashing, however often far from reality. Bad news: LCA ISO 14044 cradle-to-gate data is not 100% CBAM compatible (due to specific EU made definitions, see report), but relatively easy to be made from LCA data. Don't punish yourself, get the real data; it pays off....

Starting July 31, 2024, the European Union’s (EU) Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) requires importers to report the actual embedded emissions data of their imports from non-EU manufacturers, instead of relying solely on estimates. This means companies need better supply chain transparency and stronger collaboration with suppliers to meet these Scope 3 reporting requirements. Read URSZULA SZALKOWSKA's “Prepare for CBAM Compliance” article to learn more about how the CBAM may impact your business and how EcoEngineers can help with your Scope 3 reporting needs.
