Array of arrays – TEXTSPLIT wrapped inside TEXTJOIN Over the last couple of years, Microsoft has introduced a few very powerful dynamic array functions. One of their characteristics is that a formula in one cell can take everything in a muti-cell array, and perform an action on it. Alternatively, a formula can take a cell and generate a multi-column or muti-row answer. TEXTSPLIT is in the latter category, that is to say, it can split one cell, but it cannot natively split an array of cells (I have learnt that this is referred to as the “array of arrays” problem). I owe Giles Male a huge debt for showing that there is a way to use TEXTSPLIT on an array, which is to wrap TEXTSPLIT inside TEXTJOIN, and to then use a delimited that is not part of the original array to execute the TEXTSPLIT. Here’s an example: Imagine that you have a table in cells A1:A4 where there are the format of each cell is as follows: Gleneagles – Perthshire – Scotland Dubai Creek – Dubai – UAE Etc. If you enter =TEXTSPLIT(“-“,A1:A4), this will just give the first values in a column. However, we can fix this by wrapping it in TEXTJOIN as follows: =TEXTSPLIT(TEXTJOIN(";",,A1:A4),"-",";"). This will give all three columns in four rows. And if we have different delimiters, e.g. Golf du Medoc – Bordeaux : France, we can fix that by putting all the appropriate delimiters in curly brackets as follows: =TEXTSPLIT(TEXTJOIN(";",,A1:A4),{"-";":"},";") If you have not yet seen the series of videos that Giles Male and Diarmuid Early are putting out this week in preparation for the Excel World Cup, you are missing out!
