The New Orleans Investment Conference is the place to be if you are ready to surround yourself with hundreds of incredibly humble, big thinkers, kindred spirits, beautiful, kind, down to earth people who have figured out the secret is to share stories (successes and failures) to help others. These are your zebras, this is your tribe. It's like one massive B12 SHOT for the soul. But it's not for everyone. Brien Lundin's attendees tend to have a few things in common....They're older, most are self-made wealthy, and they have incredibly powerful, finely tuned BS detectors. They'll see through snake oil lifestyle companies in a heartbeat. But if you're honest, and you have a good project, you simply won't find a better group of serious investors to share your story with. I've heard a few unfortunate comments over the years...from people who just didn't "get it." Party people who just wanted a trip to the Big Easy. "It was okay....but we saw the exact same people every day for four days." That's what makes the show so powerful. Brien's conference isn't a circus. It's like a family reunion. Most of the people have known one another for decades. One Christmas after the show our company received 94 Christmas cards from NOIC Attendees who had visited our company booth. This is what can happen when the right people have several days to develop real relationships with real people. Keystone Sessions Takeaways: First off give Keystone Innovation District a follow to follow the journey and mission of what’s being developed in the Crossroads area! One aspect is Keystone sessions. Where every Wednesday, 3 diversed sessions are put together to intentionally intersect a variety of industries in the Kansas City Region to break down silos and collide ideas. Last night was just that. ⏰ At 5, we had a group of panelist talk about the inner workings of the current Web3 Market. ⏰ At 6, was fortunate to hear about Bryan Shannon’s journey when founding and exiting TicketRX. A tip that stood out to me was when trying to build deep relationships with prospective stakeholders do the following: Keep them in the Loop! Send a reocrruing email (every 3 months or so) Hi, *blank* Since we last talked I have done ABC, currently I am doing XYZ, and I’m planning on doing 123. Small Ask. Thanks. And your golden. Imagine giving someone you want to work with a quarterly update for two years. When it’s all said and done atleast they know you will deliver on what you say. Appreciate this gem 💎 ⏰ And lastly at 7, Kevin McGinnis gave his insights on “Pitching 101”. The do’s and don’t when talking about your business to individuals at networking events, prospective partners, prospective employees, and/or investors. A lot of notes on that one. Mazzone & Associates was pleased to attend the Northstar Private Equity Heavy Hitters® Southeast event with 30 leading Private Equity firms looking to acquire middle market companies with EBITDA of $10mm-$30mm.    Stuart Sanford, Ryan Durham, and Bradley Herring represented Mazzone at this first-class event,  which provides a breadth of insights across private equity’s view into various trends and industries including industrials, technology, healthcare, and consumer markets. Below are a few observations from our meetings: -After a slow start to the year, the number of assets coming to market has steadily increased. While deals coming to market are up from earlier this year, the quality of these assets still varies widely as there are still quite a few “reboots” out in the market. -The debt capital markets continue to slightly improve for sponsor-backed transactions as competition from both banks and private debt has increased throughout the year—on >$10mm EBITDA platforms, spreads have come down over 100bps+ and total leverage on transactions has creeped up 0.5x to 1.0x EBITDA. -Large corporations have been slower than expected in bringing identified non-core carveout assets to market; however, there continues to be optimism around a more positive interest rate environment driving additional deal flow in this segment of the market.

2023 – The Year in review – Celebrating through a few pictures … An eventful year with numerous, regional, private events helping businesses and families connect. The highlights, of course, are the initiation of several successful transactions amongst family teams of The Value Legacy. These successes will continue to resonate in to 2024 and beyond … The Value Legacy’s vision is to bring together principals of family businesses towards pursuing shared objectives that complement their strategy for growth, through shared experiences. We sought guidance, asked innumerable questions, listened to every member of the team and then tried to connect the dots. These conversations sparked several ideas which are now work in progress. The nimbler ideas are already being implemented, profitably! I'm just getting back to Denver after spending 3-days with 60 veteran entrepreneurs through the Bunker Labs CEO Circle. A few takeaways: #1: Failing is not the same as failure! France Q. Hoang shared about how we fail a million times as a founder. Quoting or running out of money is failure. Otherwise, we're on a quest to "get it right" (rather than "be right"). #2: The importance of emotional support for CEOs Whether I spoke with CEOs with 600+ employees or CEOs with two, it is a lonely, isolating, and constantly challenging journey. Being around others on a similar journey - to challenge, support, and point out blindspots - is essential. #3: Clarity and perspective come from time away I learned a lot from the seminars. I learned even more from other CEOs who shared their story and gave advice. And I learned just as much from stepping away from the business and getting a new vantage point on what I'm building. Don't be afraid to take time away - it'll help you work on the business rather than just in the business. ----------------------------------------- Thank you, Todd Connor, Chris Carlson, Reggie Ordonez, and the entire Bunker Labs team for putting on an exceptional event. I attend a lot of conferences and have spent the past decade investing in myself by being in the room with experts to gain more knowledge. Admittedly, there are one or two that are my favorite gatherings due to the quality of speakers and the authenticity of the storytelling. As I shared in a previous post, since COVID I have been following and listening to the weekly podcast of Earn Your Leisure I made a decision early in 2022 to attend Investfest in person. Last year due to personal reasons I could not attend and pushed my decision to 2023. This year 20,000 other individuals had the same idea and traveled to Atlanta to learn, network and grow. Simply, to gain more knowledge. This year, when tickets were announced I immediately purchased a ticket and told several friends I would be attending. I wanted to bask in the energy of like minded individuals and learn from industry leaders. ***I have set a personal goal to speak at Investfest 2024.*** The weekend was full of aspirational, honest and authentic conversations from industry leaders. To be in the audience and learn from experts such as Catherine Wood, Tabitha Brown, Ruben Harris, Maverick Carter, Lonzo Ball, Humble Lukanga and many more speakers was inspirational and motivating. To learn and listen from keynote speaker Sean Combs was a masterclass with a seasoned serial entrepreneur who could teach real life examples of adversity, loss and tremendous success. Sean shared his experiences in business navigating the challenges of high budget deals and the barriers he is breaking to create opportunities for others to follow. On Sunday, attendees got to listen and learn via a conversation between Robert F. Smith and Steve Harvey. That conversation is embedded in my mind and for the next few decades I will share that I was in the room to listen and witness excellence in business personified. Two men from diverse backgrounds who challenged all attendees to "shoot higher" and "develop the habits" and that "I am enough."
