Defence technology is at the forefront of global discussions as battles continue in Ukraine and the Middle East. At the Resolution Conference and Sifted Summit in London, Ukrainian companies showcased rapid innovation fuelled by frontline feedback and backed by generous donors and charities. This agile progress contrasts with traditional defence tech, dominated by major contractors and lengthy government procurement processes. Notably, real-world demands have led to a fourfold rise in venture capital investment for defence tech in NATO countries since 2019, with 59 new European and 51 new American defence firms emerging in this period. Much as I've said in the past that over-extension of VC funding is a dangerous game, and much as I find the concept of 'disruption' of an industry as vital and profound as defence to be objectionable as a premise...I don't think that I've seen the issues of the current procurement bureaucracy (whether PPBE or that form of procurement solution utilised in any nation) and its real world detriment put forth in a more sensible, concise, and profound manner. Granted, the trifecta of exquisite, expendable, and reusable systems all have their place in warfare in a general sense for any major warfighter. Yet, this paper lays out the problems and solutions with precision, clarity, and puts forth an ideal justification for achievable implementation of industrial might and free market power for the development and proliferation of superior systems. While admittedly, it's unlikely to come about rapidly given the entrenched nature of any government organisation (regardless of nationality) the aims and ideals set out in this paper are what the envisioned combinitive power of private firms and government entities within defence is MEANT to be (the very vision that those making the choice between privatised/private defence firms and purely state-run institutions were employing when they chose to side with the former.) As I said last week, Anduril Industries' competition with the rest of the UAS Primes for the NGAD Loyal Wingman programme (alongside such a meteoric rise) really do show the successful implementation of the model set forth (something not to be simply dismissed.) Not that it matters given our current insignificance within the defence market, but EMC Operations Group is backing Fury all the way, confident in Anduril's ability to deliver on the first proper procurement of long-term, universally considered mainstay systems (alongside involvement in the new US industrial strategy steps forward.) As aforementioned, I'm against the manner in which most firms are trying to ride VC funding in an unsustainable manner, but Anduril is one of the few firms treading the line correctly. Christian, what a brilliant analysis (economically, militarily, industrially doctrinally, academically, politically...really hits the nail on the head in all categories.) I truly do recommend a read! #defence #defenceindustry #military #armedforces #defense #defenseindustry #warfare #academia #industry #industrialinnovation #industrialstrategy #anduril #andurilindustries #procurement Christian Brose Peter W. Extractions: 1.The initiative of independent actors in this ecosystem has given Ukraine an early edge in many areas such as the use of autonomy and artificial intelligence in support of reconnaissance and precision strikes. However, the informality of the approach also poses challenges. 2.Donations and crowdfunding enjoy low overheads, but only commercial contracting can tap the much larger and reliable pools of state funding and private capital necessary for planning and scale. The donation of ostensibly free goods and services has enhanced national resilience, but the outsized role of volunteers in the supply of essential battlefield capabilities sometimes becomes a source of controversy. https://lnkd.in/dhpbDWWq

Aviation Spine Specialist SME Physiotherapist for USN & USMC, SOF, military, & comm air aircrew. Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. Mitigating spine pain to keep you in the seat.
Rural areas lack access to “gold standard care” as it is, let alone a military installation, limited to Tricare providers, who are reimbursed 20% of their costs. I spoke with a neurosurgeon who said “at least Medicare and Medicaid pay. Tricare may not pay for surgeries for two years, if at all. A warm body, or “someone with a degree” in a rural area doesn’t not equal quality care. Expertise and skill is required in these areas without access to research or level 1 hospitals. See post on spine issues and increased incidence in military in the comments. When a service member sacrifices their autonomy, they should not also sacrifice their agency to affect the care they receive or to be cared for correctly. When my last Navy clinic is reported to be 3rd in ALL of mootsru medicine, not just the Navy, in a rural area, DHA needs to not simply stay the course. They need to excel, and exceed expectations if they are going to limit access and be a gatekeeper to gold standard care.
#MCPON Honea, thank you for raising this issue to the HASC. Remote and Isolated installations are the ‘canaries in the coal mine’ that first experience the effects of Quality of Life gaps that degrade our Quality of Service. Access to quality healthcare outside the fenceline is receding fast - and it is being felt first in rural areas like ours. https://lnkd.in/gM8hGCNr This Quality of Life gap is felt even more acutely by our Department of Defense Civilian shipmates who stand the watch ashore and do not have access to on base clinic support. Hooyah - I’m proud to be your shipmate…thank you for tilting at the windmills that matter! #ChinaLakeRocks
