For those who have been following my career for the past 10 years: 1. Hiding my illness and disability has been hard. Being sick is hard enough, pretending your "okay" to your employer causes a whole other level of stress. 2. Trying to fit in a box that the average employee can fit in - when I have an "invisible" disability has not been easy 3. Employers are not equipped to support "invisible" disabilities 4. Most people with "invisible" disabilities are not sure what they need either! I have recently joined the CGS Equity Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and I'm forcing myself to have difficult discussions and share my experiences with others. Ontario's Employment Services for People with Disabilities: Is Red Tape Holding Them Back? New report reveals challenges under the revamped system. People with disabilities face unique barriers in the job market. A recent transformation of Ontario's employment services aimed for efficiency, but it's created unintended consequences. The report, "Tangled in Red Tape," finds: Increased administrative burden reduces support for job seekers. Funding struggles and high caseloads create a difficult environment. Staff turnover threatens expertise within the sector. The report calls for urgent action, including: Reducing red tape to free up time for direct support. Re-evaluating funding and performance measures. Addressing staff burnout and expertise loss. We urge the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) to address these concerns and ensure effective support for job seekers with disabilities. Avoiding some common pitfalls when hiring individuals with disabilities can help drive sustainable growth and create new opportunities. Based on her experiences and conversations with other individuals living with disabilities, Kylie Moore has found that several universal strategies can help every employer recruit, hire, and support workers with disabilities. 1. Build an Inclusive Work Environment Create an inclusive environment for all by recruiting from the disability community and using targeted job boards. Develop inclusive policies for hiring, promotion, and benefits. Celebrate diversity and measure inclusivity through feedback. 2. Create Accessible Job Postings Ensure job applications are accessible by using clear, concise language and multiple formats. Highlight that your organization is an equal opportunity employer and provide contact info for accommodations. 3. Ensure an Accessible Interview Process Ensure interview accessibility: accessible rooms, clear format, extra time, direct communication, and flexible structure. 4. Train Supervisors on Accommodation Practices To create an inclusive work environment, companies must train their supervisors to work with employees with disabilities and teach them about the accommodation process. Supervisors should familiarize themselves with the different disability laws and know the difference between job accommodations and modifications. According to the agency National Trends in Disability Employment, they believe the surge in disability employment via work from home jobs (originally sparked by COVID) has plateaued. And this is all because of brand new labor statistics that show the employment rate for people with disabilities has dropped slightly from last year from 37.3% to 36.9% #disabilityemployment #workfromhomejobs

Each October, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), we celebrate the contributions, achievements, and potential of people with disabilities in the workplace. I can't tell you how much it means that over time, employers have joined in the realization that there are many roles a person with a disability can do with great success. And they bring to the workplace not only their skills but the passion to be employed. And employers have found, with or without accommodations, that this workforce has a strong set of work values and ethics that often sets them apart. I can speak to that directly regarding my work with state organizations that support the disabled. 💡 During this month, also going forward I ask that you engage with your Human Resources team on how they can creatively identify, locate and hire those with disabilities. 💡 Look for their abilities. Identify opportunities in your workplace. 💡 Is there a way to match them with a job coach? 💡 Is there a job sharing role that would work in your business? 💡 What, if any do you see as barriers - not necessarily physical barriers but maybe even uninformed barriers? 💡 Does your business naturally lend itself to part time roles for those that can't manage a full time position? 💡Turn on your creative thinking and let your HR team loose at looking to find "YES", solutions rather than, "It won't work" solutions. #hirethedisabled #NDEAM #SpecialOlympics #ADA

Last week, I attended the 'Driving Disability Employment for Employers" event organized by JobAccess and moderated by Paralympic champion Katrina Webb-Denis PLY OAM. The event featured valuable insights from guest speakers and was followed by panel discussions- Primal Fernando, Anaab Rooble MAICD, Kerrie Loveless, and Sophie B. This seminar brought together leaders, advocates, and professionals to explore strategies for creating disability-confident workplaces and the benefits of #inclusive hiring practices. **Key points shared** **The importance of addressing both #physical and #digital accessibility. **Proactively asking candidates about any required adjustments before interviews. **Ask the person (ATP). Please don't assume. **Fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. **The critical role of leadership in driving disability inclusion. Speakers shared that 90% of employees with #disabilities are as productive or more productive than their peers. Moreover, disability-inclusive organizations often outperform their peers in financial performance and productivity.
