Is the Art of Hospitality Dead? When did "good enough" become the new gold standard? I recently stayed at a hotel and was left wondering if the art of hospitality had taken an extended vacation. The problems were numerous, but the real kicker was the lack of empathy and service recovery. Remember when exceptional hospitality was the norm? What happened to making things right when they go wrong? Simple details seemed to have vanished—like ordering a meal poolside at a luxury hotel. Instead of a serving of ketchup in a glass jar or even a dip packet, I was given 50 tiny packets that I had to painstakingly tear open. As for the cutlery? Let’s just say it struggled to cut through the lettuce, let alone a burger. We’re charging more than ever in the hospitality industry, yet it feels like many places are cutting corners. But here’s the twist: Tourism has evolved, and so must we. It’s time to reinvigorate our standards, deliver exceptional products, and invest in the right talent. Leaders need to champion a culture of excellence and anticipate guest needs with a dash of genuine care. Let’s bring back the excitement of exceeding expectations and making every guest feel like a VIP.
