Cover reveal! This September, The MIT Press is publishing the latest from one of the most trusted voices in AI, Gary Marcus. "Taming Silicon Valley: How We Can Ensure That AI Works for Us" goes on sale 9/17/24! Marcus explains the potential—and potential risks—of AI in the clearest possible terms and how Big Tech has effectively captured policymakers. He begins by laying out what is lacking in current AI, what the greatest risks of AI are, and how Big Tech has been playing both the public and the government, before digging into why the US government has thus far been ineffective at reining in Big Tech. He then offers real tools for readers, including eight suggestions for what a coherent AI policy should like—from data rights to layered AI oversight to meaningful tax reform—and closes with how ordinary citizens can push for what is so desperately needed. "Taming Silicon Valley" is both a primer on how AI has gotten to its problematic present state and a book of activism in the tradition of Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book and Thomas Paine's Common Sense. It is a deeply important book for our perilous historical moment that every concerned citizen must read. #tamingsilicionvalley https://lnkd.in/eesw8KWv

So why did Google win „the Internet“? – they solved the biggest problem with that new technology. In the case of the Internet, it was information overload But which one is THE AI problem? History tells us that firm will win the AI economy. History also tells us that right now, it is not obvious what the winning problem, let alone the solution, is. https://lnkd.in/d-S-vE2Q

Big tech's dominance of the rapidly developing artificial intelligence (AI) market is a matter of "real concern", the competition regulator has warned. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is looking into the new breed of powerful AI tools - foundation models. They include text and image generators, such as ChatGPT. The CMA found an "interconnected web" of AI partnerships involving the same firms: Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and chip-maker Nvidia. #artificialintelligence #competition #uk https://lnkd.in/eySnhNuk

#AI is on the front pages again today with Sir Keir Starmer set to announce generational plans to put the UK at the heart of the global AI revolution. With AI projected to add £400 billion to the UK economy by 2030 and a host of new tools at our disposal, we are entering a pivotal era in artificial intelligence. Sir Keir's endorsement of Matt Clifford’s AI action plan reflects Labour's recognition of AI’s transformative potential. However, long-term success will require careful balance of innovation with responsibility, especially in relation to public services and the NHS, as well as resisting over-regulation that stifles growth. Only decisive action will maintain or improve the UK's position as the world's third-largest AI market.

🚨 Government Competing with Big Tech in AI? No Thanks! 🚨 Governments trying to out-innovate Big Tech in AI is a losing battle. Bureaucracy, inefficiency, and wasted tax dollars can't match the rapid innovation of the free market. Let open-source AI projects and competition thrive while the government focuses on regulation and collaboration. Want to dive deeper? California’s proposed “Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act” (SB 1047) has revealed clear tension between ensuring #AI is used responsibly while still fostering AI innovation. The bill targets #AIModels costing over $100 million and requiring massive computing power. Critics argue that this bill unfairly burdens creators and consumers of open source models, including startups using these models, with complex and vague regulations and liability, potentially stifling innovation. HEAVY.AI Co-Founder and CTO, Todd Mostak, argues that the problem lies in the fact that the bill targets the creators and consumers of the technology, rather than focusing on concrete ways it can be misused.
