Have you noticed the diverse naming rights agreements around your day to day? At stadiums, amphitheaters and sports venues, many of them bear the name or trademark of a company. In North America in particular, naming rights agreements are an integral part of our lives: over 90% of sports teams in the top five professional leagues have signed one. In this second sports law publication, Sébastien Vézina, Éric Lavallée and Alexandre Turcotte answer questions that are fundamental to understanding the stakes involved in this practice: What are the main objectives? How is the market evolving? What are the right reflexes for choosing the ideal partner and structuring your partnership? Read on: https://lnkd.in/e9AQ4BAV

HSW’s defense of high-profile litigation over the publishing rights to Sports Illustrated has unearthed allegations of deceptive and illegal business practices. The firm has filed a countersuit on behalf of the sports magazine’s former publisher, The Arena Group Holdings Inc., alleging it was pushed out of its role through a “multistep corporate heist.” The litigation began when Arena missed a $3.75 million royalty payment to brand management company Authentic Brands Group LLC (ABG), which is now seeking a $45 million termination fee. However, the countersuit alleges Arena would never have missed that payment if ABG hadn’t undercut its attempts to make the business profitable while secretly conspiring with competitor Minute Media Inc. to strip Arena of its publishing license, trade secrets and publisher relationships. HSW partners Yonaton Aronoff and Megan Dubatowka, along with associate Juannell Riley, are representing Arena in the litigation. Brand rules all. To be uncurious is to fail. Balance the Force: science and voodoo. Commerce and creative intersectionality. Commune with the masters: Kaizen, Sun Tzu, Carlin, and Jobs. Avaritia malum.
Major news in the branding of the amphitheater. I like it. Acrisure is a good title sponsor for this phenomenal venue. I still need to see the following list of community-centric ideas embraced by all involved. Here's hoping we can get Grand Action 2.0, Grand Rapids Chamber, City of Grand Rapids, Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., and Experience Grand Rapids listening and thinking about these concepts: - Parking needs to be more thoroughly planned. There is too much presumption and utopian vision involved right now that puts burden on the neighborhoods and gives too much credit to the average visitor's scope of concerns. - This needs to be the first in a lineup of partnerships between The Rapid and all large venues to mitigate the lack of parking - and it needs to be binding since Vital Streets and The Rapid tend to change things somewhat unilaterally. - Let's seize the opportunity for vast equity such as a small ticket premium to be directed toward housing or other concerns (example: $12K per event being raised - over half a million per year - with just $1/ticket added to this fund). - Priority should be given to hiring short and long term employees from inside the City Limits, preferably from the nearby neighborhoods accessible without car use, which will also be conscripted as the parking lots for this venue. - Legally-binding commitments should exist to always keep the adjacent park and river walk open for normal use and hours, and prohibiting promoters or artists from any park-closure demands. I've seen this "show" before, with the Ascend Federal Credit Union Amphitheater in Nashville. - This venue needs to be a "Ticket Freedom Venue" - with any monopolistic agreement with Ticketmaster banned, and any other agent or partner prohibited, by a binding agreement, from forcing Ticketmaster on events and artists like they do at the Van Andel Arena and DeVos Place.
Get ready for the ultimate outdoor concert experience in downtown Grand Rapids at the Acrisure Amphitheater! Just announced: Acrisure pledged the lead gift for the new Riverfront Amphitheater, securing naming rights. Stay tuned; the Amphitheater is slated for completion in the spring of 2026! 🎵
