A historic statement for a historic day: The IRCT is proud to stand #UnitedAgainstTorture with the 719 survivors of #torture and other ill-treatment from across Latin America signing a letter demanding their Heads of State mark today's 40th anniversary of the Convention Against Torture by eradicating #torture from their region. To download and distribute the letter 👉 https://lnkd.in/duJmTv5B The letter is being personally addressed and sent to the presidents of each of the 13 countries in Latin America where the survivors suffered #torture and other ill-treatment; some decades ago, some much more recently. A copy of the letter will also be sent to those same countries' permanent missions to Geneva, home of the United Nations Committee Against Torture, the UN #HumanRights Council, and other #HumanRights treaty monitoring bodies. Never before have so many survivors come together to speak with one voice directly to those whose duty it is to uphold the absolute prohibition against #torture. Their demands are clear: 👉 Prohibit all forms of torture and make a public statement that torture will not be tolerated in your country. 👉 Investigate and punish the perpetrators, including those who issued the warrants. 👉 Ensure comprehensive reparations for us, the survivors and our families, developed under our consultation and without having to condition them on successful prosecution. The IRCT commends the collaboration between survivors in Latin America and welcomes this strong example of #SurvivorEngagement as an essential building block for the promise of #healing and #justice set out in the Convention Against Torture, and to the success of our common mission to eradicate all forms of #torture and other ill-treatment, everywhere and always. #UDHR #HumanRightsDay #CAT40 I am fully behind these courageous survivors, compassionate human beings and leaders of our time. They are over 700 individuals from across #LatinAmerica who have suffered torture at the hands of their own governments and yet who are now standing tall and speaking up for justice and so that no one else will suffer. They have sent letters to the presidents of 13 countries! As IRCT International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims explains: Never before have so many survivors come together to speak with one voice directly to those whose duty it is to uphold the absolute prohibition against #torture. #humanrights #EndTorture #humanitarian #refugees #healing #Justiceforall #UnitedAgainstTorture

Could it be that our system of governance commits the error of being too strict and too venal, with strict application of a hidden British class system? Which sector of our society runs this system? Can you identify and characterise who they are? From ancient wisdom, what kind of person is too strict and what are the inevitable consequence of this behaviour? #governance #error #strict #venal #class #characterisation https://lnkd.in/gybDQsJg

After more than a year of the war, I still have one question for the great majority of people who are purportedly pro-Palestinian: how do they think they improve the world? In what specific ways might the world be improved by rewarding genocide attempts? How could prejudice be countered by the instant embrace of blast antisemitic fantasies? How is it advantageous to assist the survival of a violent theocratic tyranny in the name of freedom advocacy? How will they strengthen international law, in their opinion, by bending it to apply blatantly discriminatory standards? The only conclusion I could find was that their stated objectives don't align with the real ones. The assaults that the minority who truly care about them endure only served to reinforce my conclusion. Since so many people are lairs, we have a problem without a solution, which is the true issue with this conclusion. Furthermore, the situation won't get better when the war will end.

🥳 Wrapping up 2024 on a high note! Thrilled to share my latest publication (forthcoming Evrigenis Yearbook of International and European Law, Vol. 6) spotlighting how early post–World War I efforts to address atrocities against Christian minorities in Anatolia helped lay the groundwork for protecting non-dominant groups. Drawing on archival sources (diplomatic records, treaties, and submissions to the Commission on the Responsibility of the Authors of the War and the Enforcement of Penalties), my research uncovers how these crimes were not only labeled as offences “against the laws of humanity”, but even more significantly, as “crimes against public (international) law”. By revisiting the Treaty of Sèvres and subsequent legal milestones, this article illuminates a formative moment in international justice — one that continues to shape modern principles of group rights, victim protection, and legal responsibility. May it serve as a reminder that confronting injustices past and present remains essential to building a more equitable and inclusive future. https://lnkd.in/ddEfdE77 #CollectiveRights #CrimesAgainstHumanity #CrimesAgainstNonDominantGroups #Genocide #FirstWorldWar #InternationalCriminalJustice #Armenians #Greeks #TreatyOfSèvres #Amnesties #ArmenianGenocide
