Providing quality veterinary care is not only standard practice for our IndeVets at their clinics, but they’ve also taken that care into underserved communities. Associate IndeVet, Dr. Dana, recently joined a Rural Area Veterinarian Services (RAVS) medical mission and had the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of many animals (and their human counterparts). We are incredibly proud of all the ways our IndeVets are transforming the veterinary profession across the United States. Check out her story below! The Humane Society of the United States

Knowing what dogs like to watch could help veterinarians assess their vision Ever wonder what kind of TV shows your dog might choose if they could work the remote control? New research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Veterinary Medicine provides some answers, but the study was more interested in solving a longstanding problem in veterinary medicine than turning canine companions into couch potatoes. According to Freya Mowat, veterinary ophthalmologist and professor in the School of Veterinary Medicine’s department of surgical sciences, researchers wanted to determine factors, including age and vision, that influence a dog’s interest in interacting with video content. Ultimately, the goal of the study, which launched two years […] Ever wonder what kind of TV shows your dog might choose if they could work the remote control? "The reasons for veterinary nurses/technicians seeing more suspected cases are not clear but may be because, in many modern practices, they spend more time with clients overall and therefore have more opportunities to detect cases where there is a reasonable suspicion of animal cruelty. Veterinary nurses/technicians may assist multiple veterinarians with appointments throughout the day, as well as see veterinary nurse/technician appointments, which could lead to having contact with more patients per day than some veterinarians." It's not just that. Technicians have nothing to lose other than a job if there is retaliation. We are tired of seeing problems hidden because someone else is afraid to lose their credibility or have them investigated by the county or state. We are also trained to look at animals and evaluate our patients a bit differently so there is a different perspective. Same when communicating to our clients.
Survey results showed that veterinary nurses/technicians were more likely than veterinarians to disclose seeing suspected cruelty in their career.

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐕𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐲 is celebrated on the last Saturday of April. The day is dedicated to the veterinary profession and its contributions to society. The World Veterinary Association (WVA) established World Veterinary Day in 2000. It was first celebrated on 29 April 2000 and has been celebrated every year since. Each year, a different theme is chosen to highlight a specific aspect of veterinary medicine. The theme of World Veterinary Day 2024 is '𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀' This day offers a significant opportunity to recognize and honor the enormous contributions of veterinarians to society and to raise awareness about the importance of veterinary medicine. Veterinarians are pivotal in preventing and managing animal diseases, benefiting human health via public and private veterinary services. Their key duty involves promptly detecting and addressing disease outbreaks to minimize their impact on both humans and animals. Their contributions drive the progress of veterinary medicine, vital for overall health. #WorldVeterinaryDay2024 #WorldVeterinaryDay #VeterinaryCare #AnimalHealth #VeterinaryMedicine #OneHealth #GlobalHealth #VetLife #AnimalWelfare #PublicHealth #VeterinaryProfession

In light of the veterinary shortage, increasing costs of care, relinquishment rates, and a greater understanding of just how many families would be financially burdened by even a modest veterinary bill (much less an emergency(!)), increasing access to veterinary care has been a hot topic across the country, especially in the last few legislative sessions. At Human Animal Support Services, we support many creative ways to increase access to veterinary care *without* burdening and discriminating against low-income families through tactics like traditional mandatory and punitive spay/neuter and microchipping laws. Check out my latest blog to learn more about some of the exciting legislative efforts HASS is supporting in 2024!

"Similar to human health, the community expects the veterinary profession to provide services for private (individual) benefit and also deliver services that benefit the public (public good).
