Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister | Emerging Tech & Regulations| Public Finance & State Capacity | LSE & TISS Alumni
In our column for LiveMint, Dr. Bibek Debroy, Shri Sanjay Kumar, and I delve into the challenges faced by state-level school boards in India, which have shifted from their foundational goals towards an examination-centric approach. This trend, dating back to the colonial era's Sadler Commission report of 1919, now detracts from broader educational objectives such as promoting critical thinking and holistic development. With the number of educational boards in India increasing from 50 in 2012 to 60 today, the diversity brings not only richness but also significant disparities in educational standards and student outcomes. These inconsistencies across various boards hinder equitable educational opportunities and could impede the national educational trajectory. We argue for a reevaluation of these boards' focus, advocating for curriculum updates and alignment with the National Curriculum Framework under the National Education Policy, 2020, to ensure all students receive a robust educational foundation suitable for local and national contexts.
