DP World India launches new multimodal service. DP World has introduced a new Indian multimodal service, SARAL-2, which connects Chennai to the National Capital Region (NCR) and features a daily rail freight service with a capacity of 500 TEU a week. Last November the company launched SARAL-1 which links South Gujarat to markets in and around NCR. The SARAL operation leverages DP World’s ability to deliver multimodal services by integrating coastal shipping, rail and truck operations to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and enhance supply chain efficiencies. The SARAL-2 rail link connects Mundra port to NCR, with a coastal shipping service then used to transport containers to and from Chennai. 🚢📰 Significant shifts in India's maritime logistics: CMA CGM has realigned its operations, moving a containership call from Adani Ennore Container Terminal to Chennai. This adjustment comes amid reported disruptions and power outages at Ennore, exacerbating capacity pressures and leading to a challenging environment for adhering to vessel schedules. The APL Boston's relocation to Chennai marks a crucial move to maintain operational efficiency and minimize delays. By opting for Chennai Container Terminal, CMA CGM is prioritizing the timely loading of export containers and ensuring smoother voyage continuity. This decision underscores the importance of agility and innovative problem-solving in the maritime industry. This incident also highlights the broad spectrum of dynamics impacting port operations, from infrastructure capabilities to external disruptions. Notably, Ennore has been a focal point for advanced container handling owing to its sophisticated cranes and deeper draught levels. However, this recent disruption reveals potential vulnerabilities. Moreover, the data suggest that major Indian ports, including Ennore and Chennai, are experiencing significant increases in container volumes and transshipment loads. Such growth signals robust maritime activity but also calls for resilient and adaptable port infrastructure to handle the evolving demands. Overall, this development is a testament to the strategic responses required in the shipping industry to maintain global supply chain fluidity. #ShippingNews #Logistics #SupplyChainManagement #CMA_CGM #PortOperations #MaritimeIndustry #ChennaiPort #EnnorePort #ContainerShipping 🚢📈 https://lnkd.in/eyAKs3jZ

#News #Updates Indian Railways Freight Traffic Gets a Boost from Dedicated Corridors The recently commissioned Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) are already making a significant impact on Indian Railways' freight movement, according to officials at Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL). Key takeaways: -10% of Traffic: Despite not being fully operational, the new corridors are already handling over 10% of the total freight traffic on the Indian Railways network. -Room for Growth: The corridors are currently running at an average of 325 trains per day, well below their combined daily capacity of 480 trains. Completion of the Western DFC's last section is expected to further increase traffic. -Impressive Growth: In June 2024, Indian Railways' originating freight loading witnessed a 10% year-on-year increase, reaching 135.46 million tonnes. Current Status: -Eastern DFC: Fully operational and running close to 200 trains daily. -Western DFC: 93.2% complete and running 125 trains daily. Completion of the final stretch connecting to JNPT port is expected to significantly boost traffic. Positive Impact: -Increased Capacity: The DFCs are designed to handle heavier loads and larger trains, leading to increased freight movement efficiency. -Reduced Congestion: By taking freight traffic off the main passenger lines, these corridors aim to improve overall network efficiency and punctuality. Looking Ahead: The successful operation of these initial DFCs paves the way for further expansion of the dedicated freight corridor network in India, potentially revolutionizing the country's freight logistics landscape. #IndianRailways #FreightTraffic #DedicatedFreightCorridors #DFC #Infrastructure #Logistics #Growth

Dear All, I am happy to share my latest publication in EPW (co-authored with Mr. Shri Prakash) (ABDC- B) titled- Roadblocks to Indian Railways' 'Mission 3000 MT' [https://lnkd.in/gpZxbZ6W.] [vol. 59, issue 37, 14 September, 2024] There is an alarming trend in Indian freight transport sector- continual decline of railways in freight traffic (it is now below 30%). This is concerning as the shift is occurring from an energy efficient existing mode to more polluting mode (road). According to the National Rail Plan (NRP) the Railways plans to reverse the trend and has set target of achieving 45% freight share by 2030. It suggests a freight loading of 3,000 million-tonne (MT) by 2027 and 3,600 MT by 2030, to achieve such a target. In this article we analyze the trends in Indian Railways' financial and freight traffic performance and forecast freight loading on Indian Railways till 2030, based on its past performance. We find that it requires an impressive 11% CAGR in freight loading, which requires overhaul of its freight pricing policies (the highest CAGR it ever observed in last 50 years was 7%) along with other non-price measures. Railways need to work on the price and non-price 'roadblocks' in its 'Mission 3000 MT'. Would love to receive your comments on the article. This is a derivative of a larger project undertaken by TERI ("Strategies to Increase Railway's Share in Freight Transport in India") and the detailed reports on terminal operations, freight marketing policies, and tariff policies can be accessed from- https://lnkd.in/gUSBQAQg #railways #freighttransport #nationalrailplan #mission3000MT #freightdemandprojection TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute Shri Prakash Ministry of Railways, Government of India Sharif Qamar Viral Joshi Faiz Jamal
