CAIS is excited to announce the publication of an IS Tutorial Article, " 'Trigger Warning: This Study Contains Extremist Content.' Research Strategies for Investigations of Online Extremism and Terrorism", by Kevin M. Blasiak, Technische Universität Wien, Marten Risius, The University of Applied Sciences Neu-Ulm, and Sabine Matook, The University of Queensland. The abstract: "Scholars studying online extremism and terrorism face major challenges, including finding safe access to hostile environments where members evade law enforcement. Protective measures, such as research ethics, often overlook the safety of investigators. Investigators, including Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) analysts, encounter emotional harm, abuse from ideologues, consent issues, and legal challenges in data collection. Despite rising awareness of these challenges, scholars lack guidance on starting and navigating research in these areas. This paper identifies challenges and offers strategies for safely, ethically, and legally researching in this environment." Keywords include: Online Extremism, IS Research, Researcher Safety, Research Ethics. Cite as: Blasiak, K. M., Risius, M., & Matook, S. (2024). Excited to share my recent participation in the 81st Annual MPSA Conference! I had the privilege of presenting two papers, which are part of my dissertation (in its final stages 💪🏻): 1️⃣ "Joining and pulling back: what pushes individuals to enter or stay away from armed groups" 2️⃣ "Participation in Terrorist Groups: How Individual Agency Shapes Participation in Violent Actions" It was an enriching experience connecting with fellow researchers and discussing pressing issues in #politicalviolence #extrermism and #terrorsim. Looking forward to more fruitful collaborations ahead! 🤝 #MPAConference #PoliticalScience #Research #AcademicLife 📚

Rana Sahab Muhammad Amir Rana I have question about PIPS' latest publication on the evolving militant landscape of the country, focusing on military intervention in Pakistan's political sphere 1. What key factors does the PIPS publication identify as driving the evolving militant landscape in Pakistan, and how does military intervention play a role in this evolution? 2. According to the PIPS research, what strategies and policy measures are proposed to effectively cope with and mitigate the impact of military intervention on Pakistan's political landscape? 3. Who is the primary author of this PIPS publication, and what qualifications or background does the author bring to the study of Pakistan's militant landscape and military interventions?
PIPS' latest publication on the evolving militant landscape of the country is the result of three years of in-depth research. https://lnkd.in/dgMgv7_j

Vistage Star Award Winner | Chair Excellence Winner | Seattle CEO Peer Group Leader | CEO Mentor | Advising Chief Executives & Owners on Growth
“I spoke to 10 veterans of the bureau, including six former assistant secretaries who led it. While no single ingredient seems to explain its relative success, a few ingredients together might: INR analysts are true experts. They are heavily recruited from PhD programs and even professorships, and have been on their subject matter (a set of countries, or a thematic specialty like trade flows or terrorism) for an average of 14 years. CIA analysts typically switch assignments every two to three years. INR’s small size means that analyses are written by individuals, not by committee, and analysts have fewer editors and managers separating them from the policymakers they’re advising. That means less groupthink, and clearer individual perspectives. INR staff work alongside State Department policymakers, meaning they get regular feedback on what kind of information is most useful to them. Intelligence analysis is a notoriously difficult craft.” Reading:

Kicking the day off in Denver Colorado for the 76th #AAFS American Academy of Forensic Sciences Conference🇺🇸🧬! First session attended, “Reading the Bluebrint to Construct the Framework: Demystifying Forensic Accreditation”… An important session dedicated to ensuring quality control and management in forensic processes! Ensuring quality control and management in forensic processes that are based on International best practice recommendations not only ensures public confidence, but from a legal perspective, also ensures adequate implementation by States of certain International Human Rights Law Obligations, particularly the right to an effective remedy at the domestic level when violations are being committed by both State and private actors #AAFS #forensicscience #humanrightslaw #humanitarianlaw #internationallaw

NEW PUBLICATION 🚨: My article "The technopolitics of border security R&D: Shaping the EU’s border in the Security Research Programme" is now out in Security Dialogue. In the article, I set forth my main argument of my PhD-research of how Research and Development (R&D) of security technologies in EU-funded research programmes is shaped by different border security actors and logics and thereby reproduces ideas and rationalities of security and control. Empirically, I engage with these questions at two levels - the formulation of working programmes and the everyday work within research projects. For those who cannot access the article, I am happy to share! You can find the full article here: https://lnkd.in/de7qqpwx

From the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, Israeli calls to crush Hamas have escalated, joined by major Western powers calling for the end of Hamas’ rule in Gaza Strip (GS) and its exclusion from the Palestinian decision-making circle. This has coincided with a global campaign vilifying Hamas, accusing it of terrorism, and seeing it as an obstacle to achieving peace and stability in the Middle East. Arab and regional forces have also actively worked against Hamas, affecting their external relations and its security and developmental strategies. Arab leaders and officials have openly discussed this in closed rooms with Western leaders or with figures who later revealed it in the media, such as Dennis Ross and Thomas Friedman. You & I are being manipulated. We are being bombarded with propaganda & misinformation. Think you’re too intelligent to fall for it? Think again. The more time that you have spent as an academic the higher the likelihood that you have accepted the narrative. The discussions on the 5 Eyes Intelligence Alliance (minute 19:40) & Psychological Bioterrorism (minute 23:35) should, as a minimum, force us all to question what we are being told (sold) by our so-called leaders: https://lnkd.in/gzfAQP39
