Marquette High is a special place filled with amazing people who support the young men who come through our doors become Christ-like men for others. To show you this community, I'd like to personally invite you to our fall Open House, which takes place on Sunday, Oct. 13. Save your spot here: https://lnkd.in/gBMXFeXb There you can meet our students, teachers and fellow families navigating their journey to high school. Marquette University High School is an all-boys, Catholic School in the Jesuit tradition. The Society of Jesus has been educators for more than 450 years. I am proud to say Marquette High has shared that successful history for more than 160 of those years. Marquette High's commitment to faith, scholarship and community means we help young men develop not only their minds but also a personal relationship with God, an understanding of the world around them, and their responsibility to others. As a college prep high school, we focus on strong academic programs and co-curriculars. In addition, are committed to the moral and faith development of young men at a time we believe is most critical. That is what sets us apart. We want our alumni to flourish in college and in their careers, and just as important be loving sons, husbands, fathers, brothers, uncles, and religious or community leaders. A Marquette High education creates a lifelong network of faith, community and career support for all our alumni and their families. I invite you to learn more about our mission, and hope to see you on Oct. 13. God's blessings, Rev. Michael J. Marco, S.J. Marquette University High School President

Two years ago we created the Drs. Davis and Alexander Honorary Scholarship Fund to recognize the legacy and leadership of Drs. Terri Davis and Apryl Alexander at the University of Denver and in the overall psychology community. This scholarship fund specifically provides support to BIPOC students within our former department, the Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP). As described here (Addressing the Shortage: The Crucial Need for BIPOC Therapists in America’s Diverse Communities – MHA Spartanburg), and elsewhere, the demand for representative care from BIPOC therapists is related to their unique ability to provide a shared cultural experience and understanding for BIPOC patients. Yet, there is a dramatic shortage - the current ratio of BIPOC persons to BIPOC therapists (1,002:1) is woefully inadequate to meet currently growing mental health needs nationwide. As we continue to honor Drs. Davis and Alexander, both of whom go above and beyond to train more BIPOC providers via their teaching, mentorship, advocacy, and modeling, we know we need more funding to continue to support new BIPOC providers entering the field. Graduate coursework in psychology costs tens of thousands of dollars and student loan debt is a main reason potential trainees choose not to enter or to leave the field. Friends and colleagues, please consider donating anything you are able to support a BIPOC trainee to continue their studies in Psychology. And/or please share this post to widen our giving audience. Together, we can help diversify the field, encouraging all who need care to seek support.

In 2022, just 39% of young men ages 18-24 who graduated high school were enrolled in college, down from 47% in 2011. Black and Latino men were impacted most by these numbers, representing just 37% and 33% of young men in college, respectively. Join us tomorrow for the National College Attainment Network (NCAN)'s Spring Institute webinar to learn more from Derrick M. Fleming, Jr., MS, Michael E. Walden, and Ezequiel Jimenez about why young men aren't pursuing a postsecondary education and what states, schools, and programs can do to help them find success and close equity gaps. Every year, we hear about tremendous academic accomplishments of teenagers earning college degrees at a time when most others are simply graduating from high school. Yes, we should praise and honor these super students, but we should also ask ourselves, how many others could have achieved the same levels of education while they were teenagers? How many are being left behind because our system fails them? I believe there are thousands of children capable of doing more than tradition expects. We are proving it in Gary and Indianapolis, Indiana and in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Our open enrollment charter schools empower and support teenagers wanting to do more than tradition expects. And they are proving that if given the support, they can do more and want to do more. We are not talking about a few students, either. We are talking about many students. Our students regularly earn associate degrees and some have pushed themselves to earn full bachelor’s degrees while in high school. We seek to make this the norm, not the exception. https://lnkd.in/gyqAyrvm
