And just like that, my summer internship with WNC magazine has come to an end! This experience has been incredibly rewarding, providing me with valuable insights into magazine writing and the publishing process. Over the past three months, I've had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects and learn a great deal. Here’s a snapshot of what I gained from this experience. 💡 Collaborated with Industry Professionals: Worked closely with the Art Director and Editor in Chief, gaining firsthand insights into their roles and responsibilities. 📰 Mastered Editorial Processes: Learned the ins and outs of magazine production, from concept development to final edits. 🖌 Enhanced Writing Skills: Refined my ability to craft engaging content and adapt to different editorial styles. 🖥 Gained Insight into Design: Developed an understanding of how visual elements and layout influence the overall reader experience. ⏰ Managed Deadlines: Navigated tight deadlines and learned the importance of time management in a fast-paced environment. 🗣 Improved Communication: Enhanced my skills in communicating ideas and feedback effectively within a creative team. A huge thank you to the wonderful Allison Sherman for providing direction, support, and mentorship throughout this journey. Gianna Leider is igniting a passion for service in the future leaders of volunteerism, motivating them to contribute to their communities. Whether it's through volunteering or as a part-time summer employee, she's a source of positive light and inspiration for staff and students in JA BizTown and our summer camps. ❤️ 1. What has volunteering and working at JA taught you? "It has taught me how important it is to understand the basics of business and money. It's something that is so overlooked in our education system and should be taught more often." 2. What is one financial concept you think people your age need to understand more? "Budgeting! As a teenager, it's easy to spend money on non-necessities and not save. Going to college is an expensive event in your life and I think it's super important to acknowledge that and start saving early." 3. What are you most looking forward to about college? "Meeting new people who share similar interests but also being able to pursue my career aspirations." 4. What is your favorite JA memory? "Spirit week at Summer Camp!" 5. Anything else you'd like to share? "JA Summer Camp has created so many memories that I'll cherish forever and it is an opportunity you can't pass up." Thank you, Gianna, for being a shining example of a student volunteer! We know you will be a smashing success in all you do! 👏🌟 Visit our website at www.jaorswwa.org for more information about our summer camps. #studentvolunteers #gamechanger #positiveimpact #summercamp

There are many reasons why people choose to volunteer. Mine are a mix of giving back and being part of something bigger than me. Each year, I’m part of the organising committee for The Big Sing (I might have mentioned it once or twice 😉), and this year we had the privilege of hosting the Finale in Wellington! Twenty-four of the top school choirs from across the motu came together over three days to sing, share, and compete. The talent was next level! I absolutely love being part of this event and working as a team to ensure it runs smoothly, creating life-long memories. Our team of volunteers is diverse - spanning different ages, backgrounds, skills, and motivations. It’s hard work and can be stressful but working as part of this team is incredibly rewarding. 🎶 We share a common goal and never lose sight of why we’re doing it. 🎶 We collaborate, problem-solve, and are ready to handle any unexpected challenges as they come. 🎶 We value each other’s contributions, understand each other’s limits, and trust one another. 🎶 We support each other, strengthening our sense of community and shared purpose. 🎶 We make sure each volunteers needs are met. 🎶 We celebrate our successes, reflect on our learnings, and feel proud of the impact we’ve had. The best type of team. And we’ll all be back again next year! I'd love to hear about your own experiences with volunteering or working in a great team. What motivates you? What have you learnt along the way? #Teamwork #Collaboration #Passion #TheBigSing #VolunteersRock

What's the first thing that comes to mind when someone asks how you're doing? I often catch myself saying, “busy.” Between my day job and the work I do after hours – parenting, co-running Peacock Press, volunteering, learning French – my plate is rather full. However, I have come to understand that not all busyness is constructive. I share how I find the time for doing fulfilling work – both personally and professionally – in this article published on Apolitical: https://lnkd.in/gvqZ5Sfx
