Gender inequality is often compounded by other forms of oppression, such as racism, discrimination, ableism, ageism, and homophobia among others. Gender inequality forms part of our social context and helps create an environment where violence against women happens. Gender equality is crucial to achieving a fair, safe and equitable society for all. Together with other efforts, such as addressing the gendered drivers of violence against women and addressing other forms of oppression, we can prevent violence against women such as dowry abuse. Over the past few years, the participation of women in MGNREGS has seen a remarkable rise, significantly impacting rural economies and driving gender equality. In Karnataka, the percentage of women person-days under MGNREGS has steadily increased, starting at 49.47% in 2020-2021 and growing every year, showcasing their vital role in community development. This increase not only empowers women by offering economic independence but also contributes to the well-being of their families through better investments in health and education. MGNREGS challenges traditional gender roles by placing women at the forefront of rural economic progress, enabling them to play a key role in decision-making and community building. While rural women primarily work in agriculture and urban women in manufacturing, there are still challenges such as the need for better working conditions and higher representation in regular salaried jobs. Promoting Women Leadership in DRR-12: • The international community has recognized and committed to a strong focus on gender equality and women’s rights in disaster risk reduction. • This requires: gender-responsive governance and policy-making, gender-responsive programming, monitoring and evaluation, integration of gender into vulnerability, risk and capacity assessments, collection and use of sex- and age-disaggregated information and data, facilitating and leveraging the actual and potential contributions and leadership of women in resilience building, promoting their participation, leadership and voice in disaster risk reduction processes. • In India, the vulnerability of women during disaster was recognized as well as the limited participation of women in DRR was noticed. #womenempowerment #disastermanagement #pmoindia #idmrc #drr
