This trend is not limited to shampoos; the days when bigger sizes meant better prices are gone. From biscuit packets to shampoos to spices, smaller sizes have become more cost-effective. This shift and strategy are driven by rural consumption. Currently, urban markets in India account for 66% of total FMCG consumption, while rural India accounts for 34%. However, rural markets are growing 3-5% faster than urban markets. Nielsen projects that the Indian FMCG sector might reach a size of US$ 100 billion by 2025, with significant growth coming from untapped rural markets. Companies that can establish effective distribution channels in these areas benefit greatly from reduced competition. To cater to rural consumers, products need to be available in smaller sizes to improve affordability. Additionally, encouraging behavior changes (premiumization - Dove, Bourbon, Frooti) in rural areas often requires offering discounts. This strategy mirrors how Uber and Ola incentivized consumers to switch from auto-rickshaws to air-conditioned cars. However, many FMCG brands have recently scaled back on smaller sizes due to margin pressures. The next 5 yrs will be interesting, with the government expected to increase rural income.
