Happy Earth Day 🌍 A day to celebrate. And a day to reflect very critically. I invite you to revel in natural beauty, to be grateful for the protection that Nature offers us (such as the Dutch dunes pictured), and to celebrate the countless people actively using their time and energy to preserve this Earth. I also invite you to ponder how we ended up in this ecological mess, to reflect why we tend to fight fire with oil, to question which companies you want to buy from, and to find just one thing that you can do differently in the future. In the last years, I have become friends with my flight shame (honestly, how often do you fly?). My next phone will be a Fairphone. And yes, Veganism would be a logical next step for me as a Vegetarian. Why wait for politicians and corporations? Why demonize individual responsibility? Yes, the system is broken. Being a big fan of the festive season myself, 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞. 1️⃣ 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞: preferably grown nearby, without pesticides and bought at a point of sale within walking distance (might be challenging sometimes). For artificial trees: use them for as many years as possible. 2️⃣ 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: preferably with LEDs, and efficient and needs-based, meaning to turn it off during absence and at night. Timers can help here. 3️⃣ 𝐆𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠: Give preference to environmentally friendly product variants and - where possible - pay attention to demanding environmental labels. Second-hand products can be an attractive option as well. Wrap gifts in reusable boxes, bags, pouches, tissues or with previously used wrapping paper that you already have in your household. 4️⃣𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐬: Christmas dinners are often very meat- or fish-heavy. While there is a lot of tradition with many of these meals, it can be worth it to try out something new, as there is lots of interesting vegetarian and vegan options as well. Feel free to reach out if you need some inspiration! 5️⃣𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠: Christmas time is travel time. If possible, use trains and buses to travel to relatives and friends or form carpools. 🔔To put it in a nutshell, there are many things one can do to make this heart warming time as little climate warming as possible. 🎄Is our love for Christmas trees killing our planet? 🌍 Maybe it’s because I’ve recently re-watched ‘Interstellar’ with Matthew McConaughey on the big screen, celebrating its 10th anniversary, or perhaps it’s because I deeply care for our planet... but it strikes me as absurd that in 2025, we continue the 'tradition' of cutting down pine trees. We grow them for years, only to let them die decorated in the corners of our living rooms briefly before tossing them out like yesterday’s news. These trees, which could spend their lives absorbing CO2, stabilizing soil, and providing habitats, are instead felled for a fleeting festive gesture. In an age where environmental crisis looms larger by the day, this tradition seems more like an ecological oversight than a celebration. Time to reconsider a tradition that literally involves chopping down our natural air purifiers. For 2025, can we evolve to more sustainable traditions, please? Come December this year adopt a living tree that can be replanted, or switch to eco-friendly alternatives. The holidays should not have to cost the earth.
