📢 Yesterday A-Level Results and University Destinations were announced! We couldn't be more proud of our students achieving their potential and securing places at their dream universities. 👏🎓🎉 Here's what our Principal, Tim Naylor, had to say about this year's results - "Here we are on Results Day, with the media pundits looking for something controversial to fill the airwaves and column inches. Previously it has been ‘made up’ grades during COVID, followed by easier exams with grade inflation and universities lowering their entry requirements. In contrast, I would like to flag up the hard work put in by Bath Academy students, many of whom had decided not to settle for second best last year and took the decision to come to us and resit their A Levels. On average they improved by 2 grades per subject, with one student improving her three A-Levels by an impressive 10 grades. We teach, educate and support young people who feel one down by providing the encouragement to move from a ‘felt minus to a felt plus’, and lead more satisfying and creative lives. I am a Psychology teacher and my favourite psychologist – Albert Ellis – once said, 'The trouble with most therapy is that it helps you feel better. But you don’t get better. You have to back it up with action, action, action.' Our students have done just that, by putting in the hard work to progress to universities matching their abilities and aspirations – congratulations!" Well done everyone for your hard work and determination, and good luck to our GCSE students who are awaiting their results next Thursday. 💖 #BathAcademy #alevels #alevelresults #sixthform #independentcollege #studentachievements #unibound #unilife #intled #weareinternational #highered #university #welldone #congratulations #supportingachievement

🚨 Are Exams More Important Than Our lives? (Health Vs. Academics). This is mid-term exam season for my brother studying in PUC first year, and today he has his second exam (Chemistry). Unfortunately, he's down with a high viral fever due to climate changes and wasn't in any condition to take the exam. With a worried look, he asked if I could convince his principal for a re-exam allowance. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, so I comforted him and said I'd reach out to his principal. I called and explained, 'Sir, my brother is not in a condition to take the exam today. Will you allow a re-examination for just this one subject?' The response was disheartening: 'We can't do anything; it's not in our hands. Re- examination isn't that easy. He can remain absent, but no re-examination will be allowed.' I pressed further, asking, 'What if he performs poorly or fails? That could affect his future studies.' Sadly, the reply was, 'What would you do if it were JEE Mains or final exams? You must face it; there's no other option.' Left with no choice, my brother attended the exam with a saline drip on his hand. I couldn't help but think: at least the principal could have asked about my brother's exact condition. If not for a re-examination, he could have shown some understanding, saying, 'Let him attend the exam; I'll do my best to ensure he won't be judged for his grades during this tough time.' This experience made me reflect: If the system is this rigid at the PUC level, what can we expect in degree college or once we enter the corporate world? Are colleges and jobs valued more than our well-being? I believe it's time for us to advocate for a system that recognizes the importance of health and personal circumstances, not just academic performance. Let's promote empathy and understanding in our educational and professional environments. p.s - Our education system lacks two things: first, education, and second, system 🤷 Thoughts ? #EducationReform #EmpathyInEducation #StudentWellbeing #AcademicStress #EducationSystem #MentalHealthMatters #FutureOfEducation #CommonSense #LearningAndDevelopment #Ethics #MoralValues #EducationForAll #SystemicChange #CompassionInEducation #InclusiveEducation

Support, Don’t Control: Let your child lead their college search while you provide guidance and encouragement, promoting their confidence and independence. 4. Focus on Fit, Not Prestige: Help your child prioritize finding a college that aligns with their values, interests, and goals over rankings or perceived status. Read below for more details. Thx, Brennan!

This paper from Mollie Dollinger and my upcoming special issue of AEHE is a must read for all in the academic integrity space.
How to address and challenge student cheating and find the right balance between supportive academic integrity approaches and adversarial approaches? In a highly recommended paper in an upcoming issue of Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, Cath Ellis and Kane Murdoch have adopted a responsive regulation approach to create a pyramid model with a hierarchy of escalating responses to cheating, matched to levels of student “willingness and ability to do the work of learning.” “The phrase 'work of learning' acknowledges that, while it is possible for students to outsource the work required to produce many assessment artefacts, it is impossible to outsource learning itself… Learning is embodied and like other embodied things - such as sleep, nutrition and exercise - it cannot be outsourced… At the base are those who are willing and able. Higher up are others who at various times and in various ways can’t and at the top others who won’t… The ultimate aim of the enforcement pyramid is to encourage improvement by creating downward pressure so that as many students as possible move out of the top levels into the lower levels, as much of the time and in as many contexts as possible, thereby minimising both risk and cost. That students can be 'pressured' to move both up and down the pyramid is another reminder that students can bring different selves to different learning opportunities at different times and contexts... Generating this downward pressure requires that the tip of the pyramid has a penalty with severe enough force.” The paper is available here https://lnkd.in/gw8ZsijG

As 2025 beckons, the questions posed to academics, and anyone else for that matter, by Alexander Clark & Bailey Sousa invites introspection. “What, then, are academics’ biggest mistakes as they contemplate this mystery around life and death, time and work? With the knowledge of work and time at the forefront, what does the reminder that we each must die bring to academics’ work and life? ✔️ Too often we act like our daily work doesn’t and cannot involve choice: that we are passive in the face of inevitable academic workload and complexity. Understandably this does not feel good: the work masters us. Feeling overwhelmed dominates, over making efforts to work differently, or to even consider that academic work involves a myriad of learnable skills. ✔️ Over time, every academic experiences personal difficulties and disappointment that give rise to negative reactions, such as hypercriticism, bitterness or anger. Negativity can come to own and envelope us, fostering deep and intractable cynicism, and all kinds of behaviours, from passive aggression and bullying, to procrastination and inaction. This is no way to live. ✔️ We each get one chance. Just one go at this day, this situation and this life. To have no regrets before it’s too late, prioritize your efforts and time based on your values, and the accomplishments that truly matter to you. https://lnkd.in/gc_kbjYR
