🚊🚌🚅 Together with the National Transport Authority (NTA) we will oversee one of the world’s major automatic fare collection projects, covering the entire Irish public transport network with an account-based model. 💡 The project includes managing fare collection for trams, buses, the national rail network, and the future Dublin MetroLink using our innovative technology. 💳 We will enhance the user experience with an accessible design, enabling payments via bank cards (EMV) or mobile phones, and ensure the best fares and discounts through our Account-Based Ticketing system. #MobilitY #Ticketing #PublicTransport https://lnkd.in/ea-Papdz

Contactless open-loop payments in transportation are increasingly popular. Here are 3 models you'll come across most often: 🚃 Known Fare Model: This model is usually used for single-ride tickets. You know the fare upfront, and it won't change as you travel. You just tap your card and the operator receives a payment for the specified amount in real-time. 🚃 Accumulated Model: A system where you learn the total fare at the end of your journey. The final fare is floating and usually depends on how long of a route you travelled. Payment is made when your trip is completed. 🚃 Pre-purchase Model: These are the prepaid cards that you buy before traveling. You tap at the start of the journey, and the transit operator deducts the fare from your balance. Want to learn more about open-loop ticketing in transport? Beware the false unicorn of "one". Multi-operator PAYG and #cEMV capping for #transit - in the past months we've had a number of involved conversations in the UK about enabling PAYG & cEMV capping across bus & rail. Most groups we meet with already gravitated toward "centralised" designs, where all tokenisation/token translation and fare calculations are proposed to be done by a central system, run by a single vendor for a 10 year period, effectively committing the UK to a success/fail from a large IT procurement with many masters. We've seen this pattern fail more often than not recently (Abbot/TfN/NHS and more), and result in difficult-to-innovate or update systems thanks to that monopoly provider being controlled by committee that tends to be dominated by the richest/largest members. They also tend to create an unwelcome central "tax" on all taps, even though most (>90% of bus journeys) are just single-operator journeys. However we've been gradually spreading thinking around an alternative "decentralised" approach, based on keyless tokenisation (not needing token translation services or hash-key sharing) and a price bidding framework to make sure the operator who finds the best price for the taps done by the rider wins and gets to be "merchant of record", and running the whole thing via the already existing eTVD (electronic ticket validation database) network used by UK rail for barcode, now the largest ticket format. The eTVD's share taps, refunds, enforcement, ticket cancellation between rail operators so that tickets sold by companies A,B,C,D can travel on trains run by operators E, F via stations run by operators G,H & not require any of those participants to use the same vendor or central back office for anything. The only central features are the ticket (token) standard, messaging standard, and a flat XML file of approved eTVD servers nominated by each TOC, geographic subscriptions & the Retailer/ticket issuer public keys. The eTVD standard was created by Masabi for ATOC years ago with potential for cEMV & ABT already designed in & Masabi uses it to run our cEMV and ABT in deployments around the world. The eTVD's are already available from several competing vendors, have run for years without any fanfare, for all UK rail operators. TfL should shortly be hooking up one to enable barcodes to do tube transfers for all the major London rail stations & we are also seeing a project for multi-bus multi-mode barcode for the UK recommend the adoption of eTVD by bus operators. So if *everyone* is already getting an eTVD for barcode, why don't we just use it to share ABT, smartcard and cEMV taps too, and to agree who wins to be MoR for interoperable taps, and to register Model 3 and concessions against tokens, and all get to carry on using/owning our existing "distributed" cEMV Model 2 cEMV back offices? Seems less risky than putting all our eggs in one basket, and it hasn't got a central OPEX tax! Opinions - Central or Distributed?

The Unicard Platform - the UK’s number-one choice for ITSO ticketing solutions for rail and bus - is guaranteed by us to be certified for ITSO 2.1.5, ensuring continued compliance with ITSO rules. However, passengers increasingly prefer to travel with an existing bank card, and transport operators are increasing the use of barcode tickets. Our systems are multi-token and multi-modal, providing the ability to integrate your ITSO ticketing with other tokens such as cEMV bank cards, barcode tickets or in-app ticketing. This provides a more integrated transport network for your passengers and future-proofs your scheme against changes in tokens in the future – whilst ensuring that passengers who receive concessionary discounts or do not have a bank account are not discriminated against.
