Today marks the start of Armed Forces Week in the UK. A time to celebrate the work, efforts and sacrifices those in the UK Military community make daily.
I have always tried to champion veterans where possible within the employment sector. A veteran can bring a wide range of skills and attributes to a role that may not be within the scope of a civilian. Ways of analysing and approaching certain problems, issues or scenarios or presenting solutions that are unique and outside the box.
Some employers may worry about the relevance of a military hire. What does marching around, firing guns and camping in the mud and rain have to do with a production line? What does mending a 4.5'' Naval Gun have to do with building a car?
I implore all employers to look at the wider, transferable skills such as discipline, resolve, ability to adapt and think quickly to resolve a problem or issue. The ability to adapt when under fire/under pressure!
Whilst retention in the Armed Forces is struggling, this may be an opportunity for employers to secure an excellent asset to fulfil needs in their workplace! If you are looking to appoint a veteran or someone with technical military experience or you yourself or leaving the military and looking for a role in a maintenance role, feel free to reach out and see how I can help.
