Scaffolding Operations managers, contract managers, GMs, and divisional managers: What are your thoughts on getting the youngsters into contract management? Working in the Middle East can offer a unique experience for young talent, presenting an opportunity to work on challenging projects and learn a lot. The trouble is that everyone expects a "Dubai bling" lifestyle, fat pay packets and 9-5 hours. There's a great long-term opportunity for the younger generation to step in to contract management. It's fulfilling to educate the next generation and provide them with an opportunity to move away from the tools and look toward long-term careers. However, the initial salary doesn't compete with today's rates, and it seems everyone wants everything now without putting in the groundwork. Getting the late 20s & 30-somethings to take a pay cut, starting from the bottom and asking them to learn new skills for long-term career benefits doesn't seem to be something they want to hear. People want the big money now and are overconfident in their abilities. I'm not sure how to tackle this issue, as I see fewer and fewer young British scaffolders coming through and taking advantage of the long-term opportunities for growth.
