In an age when #journalism can often be agenda- and clickbait-driven, locally depleted, and, sadly, carelessly covered or just plain fake, it is informative and refreshing to come back to the first-edition book by Rich Martin titled "Living Journalism: Principles & Practices for an Essential Profession," which I read early on in graduate school.

True not just for journalism. All professionals need lessons in true ‘cultural competency’ not just bespoke classes on it taught by other professionals.

Freelance journalist from New Orleans covering mostly food, drink and travel, but I've worked every beat | Author | Believer in authentic and ethical journalism | “Will talk to the devil for a sandwich”
I'm learning that anything that relies on advertising -- be it a publication where people can buy ads or be it a business that could benefit from taking out ads itself -- is unstable. And I hate to say it, but social media is responsible for a lot of that. Why would a business take out an ad in a publication when most people only read the headlines and commentary shared on social media? Why would a business take out an ad when they can try to get that lightning strike virality on social media? And when you think of print today, my heart breaks because the actual magazines and papers are so thin. Why would anyone buy them, if they remember the days when they were thick? Recently I was hired to write about food for a website. And the pay is amazing. MY GOD. I asked the editor if I had to appeal to advertisers in some way, as is often the case. He said they do not have advertisers because they are owned by a Fortune 500 company with revenue in the tens of billions. So, that's my advice for those early career journalists and really for all of us. Find a publication owned by an established Fortune 500 company and write for them. Or write for a publication where advertising isn't the end-all be-all. A way to know if it is, is to look at who advertises and compare that to the content that's not clearly labeled as ad copy. If they are too similar, you don't want to be there. #journalism #journojobs
