I've been a fire engineer for number of years and still amazes me that most people don't understand what we do. My main issue is the understanding of what we DON'T do. I receive queries just about everyday for items that are out of scope. Here is just short list of things we don't do: - Type of fire alarm system (conventional or addressible) - Size of the fire alarm panel - Approval of the sprinkler pump location - Size of sprinkler valve room - Fire fighting water supply - Review of tender documents - Emergency lighting layout - Specify anything! Our role is really important at building consent however there seems to be a misunderstanding that everything with 'fire' in the name is our responsiblity. Perhaps there needs more education on role of the fire engineer. It's doesn't feel like an proper engineering disipline if its so grossly misunderstood.

#Example #SafetyObservationReport Project Name: XYZ Construction Project Location: Tower A Date: October 6, 2024 Observer: Anil Yadav Position: Safety supervisor 1. Observation: Location: Electrical Distribution Board (DB) near the tower entrance level A 3. During the routine inspection of the electrical distribution board, several safety concerns were observed. These include the following: Missing Labeling: The DB did not have proper circuit labeling. None of the individual breakers were marked with their corresponding circuit or load, making it difficult for workers to identify which areas are powered by which breakers. Exposed Wiring: In the bottom left corner of the DB, several wires were noted to be improperly insulated, with exposed copper visible. This presents a high risk of electrical shock. No Clear Access: The space in front of the DB was obstructed by stored construction materials, making it difficult to access the panel in case of an emergency or maintenance. Loose Grounding Connection: The earthing (grounding) cable was found to be loosely connected. This poses a significant risk as proper earthing is essential for preventing electrical faults and shocks. 2. Risk Assessment: Risk Category: High Potential Hazard: Electrocution, electrical fire, inability to safely isolate circuits in an emergency. Persons at Risk: Electricians, construction workers, maintenance personnel. 3. Immediate Actions Taken: Instructed the site supervisor to clear the area around the DB immediately. Recommended that all exposed wiring be insulated, and loose connections be fixed by a certified electrician. Raised the need for immediate labeling of the DB circuits for easy identification. 4. Recommendations: Circuit Labeling: Ensure that each breaker in the DB is properly labeled with the corresponding circuit and load for easy identification by workers and maintenance personnel. Cable Insulation: All exposed wiring should be repaired immediately, and proper insulation should be applied. The use of proper cable glands should also be ensured where cables enter the DB to prevent damage. Clear Access: Maintain at least 1 meter of clear space around the DB at all times, as per electrical safety regulations. This must be monitored regularly to prevent future obstruction. Grounding: All earthing connections should be checked and secured by a qualified electrician to ensure the proper functioning of the safety system. 5. Follow-up Actions: Schedule a follow-up inspection within 48 hours to verify that corrective actions have been implemented. Ensure the electrical team is informed about proper lockout/tagout procedures during any work on the DB. 6. Attachments: Photos of the DB showing exposed wiring and obstructions. Checklist from the site inspection Reported by: Anil Yadav Signature: ___________________ Date: October 6, 2024 Reviewed by: [Tower Incharge Name] Signature: ___________________ Date: ___________________
