The timing will never be perfect to start a business. I often tell my clients that if they look for reasons not to do it, the reasons will be easy to find. Recently, I've had several clients who were looking at franchises pre-covid and the pandemic made them nervous to jump into a franchise. They felt the safer path was to stay in their job and wait until things returned to normal. Nearly four years later and a few of these clients have gone through multiple layoffs in those "safe" jobs or stable careers and are now back to exploring franchise opportunities with a new perspective. Many of the people I work with say they wish they would have done this sooner in their career after they have moved forward with a franchise but it's never too late to start. What drives people to explore franchise opportunities? Right now, I am seeing a lot of people who have gone through recent layoffs or have seen large layoffs in their companies start to explore alternative career paths that allow them to have more control. Some of these people have gone through multiple layoffs over the past several years (I'm looking at you tech industry!) and don't want to search for another new job that might lay them off a year from now. Some of these people have been long-term employees in companies that have been acquired and have been struggling to find a new position due to seniority level or age. Many of these people have always liked the idea of owning their own business or being their own boss but never knew where to start. Franchising is a path that allows them to accomplish those goals without having to reinvent the wheel or design all of the systems and processes from scratch. They can take their existing skillsets, work ethic, motivation and capital and plug into a system that allows them to focus their energy on execution of proven systems and processes. A lot of people that I speak with see business ownership as a risk and want to focus on the safe route, which in their minds is the traditional W2 job. How safe is that W2 job though? Tech companies laid off around 30,000 employees in January alone and every day there are new articles rolling out about more layoffs. I am speaking to people every week who have been out of work for months and are continuing the job application process with no luck. Now, I'm not here to tell you that business ownership is risk-free, because it isn't but there are ways to mitigate that risk, especially in the world of franchising. In 1998, Van Ingram hired me to work in franchising for Valvoline Inc. I didn't want to leave Atlanta, and I didn't know much about franchising, but Van convinced me that moving back to Kentucky would be worth it. He was right. He sparked an interest that has stuck with me for 25 years!   A few years later, William (Bill) Edwards, CFE hired me to work for AlphaGraphics. I nearly tanked the deal by trying to negotiate a higher salary that was beyond my experience.   Less than a year later, the company relocated from Tucson to Salt Lake City. As you may know, the weather in those two places is *slightly* different.   Later, Keith Gerson became my boss at AlphaGraphics. He held me accountable, and I didn't like it. I thought about leaving (sorry, Keith!). But I didn't, because deep down I knew that I needed that accountability at that stage of my career, and that I would benefit from working with Keith.   Four years later, I was recruited to help 1-800 WATER DAMAGE launch their franchise development operation, requiring a move to Seattle.   In 2008, Allen Hager hired me to take over his franchise development team at Right at Home. It was a great opportunity, but it required moving to Omaha just a few months after my son was born.   None of these opportunities was perfect. In some cases, the compensation or the timing wasn't quite right. In others, I was hesitant about the move.   But the common theme is that with each decision, my career advanced forward in the direction I wanted to go.   The key message is this…   If you're thinking about a career change, don't wait for everything to be perfect.
