Whilst I'm en route to the joint Association of Field Ornithologists/Society of Canadian Ornithologists/Wilson Ornithological Society meeting, have an exciting read: Even Texas is getting in on the bird safe building code action! Austin is best known in the bird watching world for Golden-cheeked Warblers and Black-capped Vireos (people come from literally all over the world to see them), but it's also a vibrantly biodiverse area in general - Travis County has a higher bird species list than quite a few STATES have. 16 New Wildlife Crossings Projects Funded with $125 Million in Federal Grants We're thrilled to announce that 4 of the wildlife crossings projects we supported received over $64 million in funding from the highly popular Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program today. These projects include: - Oregon's first overpass on I-5 connecting the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument - The Red Wolf Crossing Project on US-64 in East Lake North Carolina (details here: https://buff.ly/3BBn4RF) - The Sandia-Jemez Mountain Wildlife Corridor Crossings Project - The Maryland Statewide Wildlife Crossing Study The Federal Highway Administration announced that a total of 16 grant winners from 15 states and 1 Tribe will receive $125 million in federal funding. All winning projects will contribute to the construction of state-of-the-art wildlife overpasses, underpasses, and directional fencing, strategically placed in high-risk areas for wildlife-vehicle collisions. We congratulate these winners and celebrate a significant step toward improving transportation infrastructure and safeguarding our nation’s iconic wildlife. It's fantastic to see badger and pine marten sightings at our home of in-field science, Dumyat, courtesy of our friends at The Future Forest Company! 🦡🌳 Historically, both pine martens and badgers have faced severe threats such as habitat loss and hunting, pushing the pine marten in particular to the brink of extinction. Thankfully, both are doing well at the moment, thanks to legal protection and a greater understanding of both species, with badgers now a common presence in many areas of the UK and the pine marten returning to many areas where it had been persecuted to local extinction. Protecting landscapes for their role in wildlife corridors and vital connectivity is a fascinating (and valid) logic for national monument designations. We cannot grow or replace these places on the landscape, or the wildlife that depends on them.

Biodiversity net gain is the big thing at the moment, but it's still important to recognise what else developers can do to support nature recovery. Great to see the commitment to support more wildlife on new developments. #planning #wildlife #planning #sustainabledevelopment

Once abundant around San Francisco Bay, the Ridgway’s Rail — formerly known as the California Clapper Rail — is now endangered. In the 19th Century, unregulated hunting plundered the species. In the 20th Century, rampant development reduced salt marsh habitat by 85%. But in the 21st Century, the Ridgway’s Rail has allies. Restoration is under way to increase healthy saltmarsh habitat for these endangered birds. Also, efforts to control the number of predatory cats are improving the chances for the Ridgway’s Rail to survive. https://lnkd.in/gbnJ6b72

A beautiful sight: an elephant family on the move! We’re excited to share this stunning drone footage of a family of elephants safely traveling through the wildlife corridor in the Leuser Ecosystem, Sumatra. Moments like this show the power of conservation in action. In 2018, Saving Nature launched an initiative to combat habitat loss, reestablish elephant migration routes, and build a buffer against poachers. Our long-term goal is to connect a 5,500-hectare area, recently designated by the government as an elephant conservation area, with nearly 300,000 hectares of protected forest—including production forest, protection forest, and national park. Our approach combines forested elephant routes, increased monitoring to impede poaching, and meaningful protections that safeguard these vital forests from exploitation. These five frog species are amongst the commonest of the amphibian that find the conditions around lake Victoria prevalent for their survival. ✔ Lake Victoria Clawed Frog ✔ Northern Clawed Frog ✔ Common Squeaker ✔ Bocage's Tree Frog ✔ Ornate Tree Frog Ponds, lakes, swamps and rivers naturally should be abundant with health environments and plenty of insects for these aquatic surviving species.
