It's important to have a process in place to verify the evaluating sonographer is credentialed in the specialty that they are evaluating and/or comping the student. For example, a sonographer who is credentialed only in RDMS (OB/GYN) would not be meeting this Standard if they performed an abdomen complete competency. Accepted credentials for an abdomen complete would include: RDMS (AB) or R.T.(S)(ARRT)

There was lots of preparation that went into the upcoming episode being released this Tuesday over billing for the Radiologist Assistant (RA). We are nervous about this release, but we are hopeful it will shed some light on the continued billing concerns surrounding the RA.  Our goal with this episode is that it will mold a unified effort when advocating for proper CMS/billing recognition. When you look at today’s imaging industry, there are some similarities to the year 2000 where we were facing Radiologist shortages. These shortages led the drive for the RA development by ACR, ASRT, and ARRT. I would assume it is safe to say that our current staffing issues supersede that in 2000 as we are faced with continued increase in aging population, increasing imaging volumes, COVID, burnout, and rise in retirement rates. Together we can bridge that Radiologist and Technologist gap! The RA is the only extender who has stayed steady in their course by maintaining a high level of integrity; unifying the R.R.A and R.P.A. by adhering to the standards set forth by the ACR, ASRT, ARRT, SRPE, and CBRPA (which we will get into on next weeks episode with Lobbyist Kyle Frazier). We are in full support of "Radiologist-led teams" and value the term “extender”; never seeking independence. The article attached speaks to the rise of IR based procedures (professional component codes; ie: needle based procedures), becoming more routine like diagnostic procedures. The RA serves as an excellent source of relief for decision fatigue, off-setting some of the more routine/non-invasive workup/procedures and freeing our Radiologist up to focus on more decisive/invasive workup/procedures. What remains unsolved is adequate reimbursement guidelines for professional component codes rendered by the RA; further supporting the need for the passage of MARCA legislation. So how do we progress forward? Do we look again at the history of the Anesthesiologist, now with support for the Anesthesia Assistant. "Just a Tech" with all the credentials I have and over 30 years of experience I am still not recognized as a Medical Professional. I am surprised at the looks in the eyes of students and working RTT's when I tell them that we are not recognized as medical professionals. I hope before I retire that our profession will take the steps to change this. We are so far behind other countries that have made that change, and they are recognized as professionals. So, "Just a Tech" think about it, in the eyes of our Allied Health Professionals who have attained that professional status and recognition, that's all we are....for now!  So, let's start by making more RT's & RTT's more aware and promote change to attain that professional status and recognition! It starts by getting involved. If anyone in our profession that desires to be more then "Just a Tech" get involved by joining the ASRT & their state affiliates, and understand where you want to see your dues being spent, ON CHANGE! get involved, participate and become engaged, let's start the movement and see "Just a Tech" removed in the eyes of our peers and we can see this change like our fellow RT's & RTT's have in other countries, we have the knowledge on how to make the change, we just need everyone involved. If every RT & RTT joined the ASRT and their state affiliate we would have the voice to make these changes, not sure why we are so complacent to remain "Just a Tech" that should be our motto "Just a Tech".
