U.S. economic and national security depends on a reliable supply of critical minerals, yet for many minerals, like cobalt, graphite and manganese, the U.S. is heavily dependent on imports. The final report from our Senior Study Group on Critical Minerals in Africa explores the role Africa plays in the United States’ efforts to diversify U.S. critical mineral supply chains and how new investment in partnerships with African countries could help drive economic development and strengthen peace and security on the African continent. USIP Senior Study Group Report on Critical Minerals in Africa: Strengthening Security, Supporting Development, and Reducing Conflict Amid Geopolitical Competition. The global transition to nonfuel-based energy sources set Africa as the next frontier for critical minerals required for modern economies. Engaging African countries in mutually beneficial partnerships requires adherence to the principles of the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) that seeks to achieve transparent, equitable, and optimal exploitation of mineral resources to support sustainable growth and socio-economic development. #AfricaMiningVision

The growing global interest in Africa’s strategic minerals emphasises the continent's potential to reshape its economic landscape. As demands for critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, graphite or nickel surge, Africa stands at a pivotal moment to capitalize on its vast resources. This article gives some good hints for governments and investors to develop win-win negotiations, especially between different investors’ and countries’ profiles. It is critical for countries to understand risk profiles and interests of Chinese companies in contrast with US or EU companies, and the entire value that can be created. Additionally, implementing strong governance and fostering regional cooperation while investing in local infraestrutura and sustainable practices may help African nations to enhance the value that remains in the countries while attracting more investors entering in a virtuous cycle Africa has an opportunity to lead the charge in the green technology revolution, transforming mineral wealth into lasting economic development and prosperity. #StrategicMinerals #AfricaDevelopment #SustainableGrowth #GreenTechnology

The European Union and Rwanda have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on critical minerals and sustainable supply chains on Monday. The agreement establishes cooperation between the EU and the African country across multiple areas, including integrating sustainable raw materials value chains, mobilizing funding for infrastructure projects, and collaboration on research and innovation. The partnership is part of the EU's Global Gateway strategy, intended as a counterweight to the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative. Rwanda is the world’s third-largest tantalum producer. It also produces tin, tungsten, gold, and niobium, and has potential for lithium and rare earth elements. #rwanda #europe #supplychains #rawmaterials #criticalminerals

Africa holds a significant share of the world’s mineral resources needed for the clean #energy transition, positioning the continent as a stage for geopolitical competition among #China, the #US, #Europe, and #Gulf countries. Gulf states, with their substantial capital and successful development stories, provide a model for #African countries that have struggled to leverage their mineral wealth for socioeconomic progress. Gulf states’ interest in #minerals and other natural resources on the continent thus offers an opportunity for African countries to adopt a different approach including creation of adequate #policy frameworks that would ensure they reap maximum benefits from their mineral resources and growing interest from Gulf actors.
