Lecturer, Preventive Medicine Physician, and Health Policy and Systems Researcher at Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University
Sometimes, we need to explore complexity through the lens of complexity itself, rather than attempting to simplify it using a reductionist paradigm. My expertise in systems thinking is a powerful tool for assessing complex situations, such as public policy processes, in addition to traditional mixed-methods research design.

Interested in how research can shape policy for meaningful impact? Lots of us clearly are as Juliet Gerrard, George Slim, Hannah McKerchar and the PM Chief Science Advisor team hosted yet another sell-out event to build vital connections between researchers and policymakers earlier this week. I’m delighted that The University of Auckland had the opportunity to co-host this event alongside Auckland University of Technology, with special thanks to Eszter Muradin. I emphasise to anyone that will listen: impact is not a zero-sum game. The more we collaborate to enhance our skills and support one another in leveraging knowledge for the public good, the greater our collective impact will be! Highlights from Juliet and George’s insights included: ⭐ Four principles that make evidence synthesis more useful for policy: inclusivity, rigor, transparency, accessibility. ⭐ The reminder that science is one of many voices in policy advice. ⭐ The challenge science faces in providing definitive answers within tight political timelines, underscoring that the most impactful scientific advice anticipates the policy-making schedule. ⭐ That science debate should not be a proxy for values debate Ashley Bloomfield KNZM CMInstD concluded the talks by pointing out that 80% of interactions with policymakers should focus on building and maintaining relationships. To me, this underlines the need for investment in knowledge brokers or mobilisers who can build and maintain key relationships for a broader knowledge base. My final take-home point was Juliet’s emphasis on the importance of bridging between science, society and government. This intersection is where real, transformative change can occur and we need to think more about how we are bringing society into the picture.

If you are curious about affect and how affect theory can inspire research in management and organization studies, please have a look at the marvellous chapters in our edited volume!
𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻 (𝗘𝗱𝘀.) - 𝘼𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙊𝙧𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙯𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 New York, NY: Routledge, 2023. 110 pp. Reviewed by: Victoria Pagan, Newcastle University Business School, Newcastle University, UK https://lnkd.in/d6mvsxFk Karen Lee Ashcraft (2018) called for us, as critical management and organization scholars, to ‘foster a critical practice of inhabiting, discerning, and cultivating relations of difference in our own work world as we also study power elsewhere’ (p. 613). Central to this is affect, which is an attractive concept to organization studies scholars, as seen in the pages of this journal regarding, for example, resistance (Marsh & Śliwa, 2022), creativity (Leclair, 2023) and (un)acceptable bodies (van Amsterdam, van Eck, & Kjær, 2023). This book defines affect as the sense of a space, its expectations, people, artefacts and objects, the ‘atmosphere of the room, the intensities between bodies and non-human objects’ (p. 1). The powerful collection, drawn together by Carolyn Hunter and Nina Kivinen, immediately offers organization studies scholars the opportunity to understand affect as we engage in research outside our work world and within our own work world. Affect is of great importance to allow us, organization studies scholars, to both delve into new research arenas and increase the richness of those already in existence.
