I really enjoyed reading this piece from Joyce Yee (thanks to Andrew Knight for sharing!): https://lnkd.in/dtnBT7DK My immediate reaction as a designer (in a non-design role) working in the public/civil sector is that being a designer is not only about delivering a design outcome, but bringing a designers mindset to the process of achieving that outcome. Some quick reflections that come to mind: - Designers need to understand what kind of change - and at what scale - decision makers are ready for. Being 'open to innovate (in design terms)' sits on a very wide spectrum. Therefore, for designers, it’s about combining a designers strengths in translating aspirations with challenging the status quo. ‘Challenging’ along can close the door on design for a while - or even forever. - Somewhat related, designers need to meet people where they are - and move at their pace. This is about using a designers assets in understanding people through a political lens. Looking forward to enjoying the subsequent conversation! #design #publicsector

If you are an architect, if you are firm owner, if you find yourself dreaming of starting a firm, if you are a student and you want to learn more about how the business side of the profession is run. "Now we have the data, it's time to act." We hear this all the time, and yet, I think often times it holds us back from actually acting. That's because there is a huge gap between 'data' and 'action'. Whilst data is useful, for us to act on it requires a whole other set of 'instruments'; instruments of imagination, emotional infrastructure, story, spirit, courage, readiness... I could go on. Looking forward to sharing our strategies for generating, and incubating, such instruments within Government and Policy work, at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) next week.
