$96-million bridge milestone reached on I-80 in Will County A significant milestone was reached last week in the ongoing $1.3 billion reconstruction and modernization of Interstate 80 with the completion of multiple key bridges, part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program aimed at revitalizing the state’s infrastructure. The project includes a $96 million investment in new bridge structures over Hickory Creek, Richards Street, and Rowell Avenue/Canadian National Railroad, which will enhance safety and capacity along the vital I-80 corridor. While the new bridges will maintain two lanes in each direction for now, they are designed to accommodate future expansion to three lanes. Upcoming plans include new interchanges with I-55 and Larkin Avenue, set to begin construction next year, as well as additional interchanges and bridge projects anticipated to start in 2026. The entire project is expected to be substantially completed by the end of 2028. JEFFERSON CITY /07/10/2024 /MODOT -- Commission approved the FY 2025-2029 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (#STIP), which lists transportation projects planned by state and regional planning agencies from July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2029. The five-year program is the largest to date and includes additional funding from General Revenue; passed by the Missouri General Assembly and signed by Gov. Mike Parson. #Funding is allocated for the improvement of interstates 70 and 44, the fixing of low-volume minor roads, and improvements to #bridges, #airports, and #rail crossings. The STIP makes available $14.6 billion of federal and state revenues for all modes of transportation over the next five years. Of the $14.6 billion, the STIP details $10.7 billion in road and bridge construction contractor awards, averaging approximately $2.1 billion per year. “The available state road and bridge funds along with the work of the General Assembly and Gov. Parson continue to result in historic investments in transportation infrastructure that benefit Missourians across the state,” said Missouri Department of Transportation Director Patrick McKenna. “We thank our regional planning partners who helped develop this plan. Delivering this high level of investment in projects is only possible because of the partnership between the MoDOT team and the private sector in design engineering and construction contractors. We are asking the public to work with us and slow down to protect the workers in work zones.” The STIP details maintenance improvements to Missouri’s 33,811 miles of roads and 10,392 bridges and culverts. The draft STIP was released in May for public review, with #MoDOT receiving 107 comments. Image Source | (©axdaohang | pixabay)

Greater Manchester mayor #AndyBurnham and former West Midlands mayor #AndyStreet have unveiled detailed proposals for a Midlands-Northwest Rail Link earlier this year. Chaired by #DavidHiggins, the review emphasises the strategic connection between #Birmingham and #Manchester, enhancing growth opportunities for both regions. The proposal, developed in collaboration with a private sector consortium, aims to improve connectivity and catalyse economic development. The Midlands-Northwest Rail Link, featuring segments south and north of Crewe, is designed to integrate seamlessly with the current HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd network, extending connectivity to #Liverpool and beyond. The staged implementation approach, combined with efficient delivery mechanisms, ensures the progressive realisation of benefits while optimizing construction methods. The review advocates for the construction of the MNWRL in partnership with private investors, offering enhanced capacity and connectivity similar to HS2 but at a more cost-effective level. This crucial infrastructure project is poised to benefit passengers and freight services, fostering improved transportation links across the Midlands and the North, and contributing to the overall development of the UK. With industry stakeholders urging swift action, the government faces mounting pressure to advance the Midlands-Northwest Rail Link project promptly. The collaboration between public and private sectors signals a promising step towards bolstering transportation networks and driving economic prosperity across the country. I think every Transport Planner in the country has worked on an iteration of the Arundel Bypass, or the Ox-Cam rail link, the A1M or another of the "eternal projects". The comments on the FT article include an economist who worked on an A303 scheme in 1987! I think of the Portway P&R rail station which I remember putting into the SW Regional Transport Strategy in my first job in 2003... finally opened in 2023. 20 Years for a single platform halt. At Bristol we found plans for the "South Bristol Link Rd" that dated back to the 1930s. It was finished (and in a inferior form) in 2017! The problem is that the minute the money starts to look short, these projects are 'easy prey' as there is a whole section of stakeholders who who want them cancelled. Scheme promoters are quite logically, less passionate than those opposed. But fundamentally many of them are needed, so in 10 years time, they come up again and the whole cycle of feasibility, design, promote... cancel starts again. Every now and again, one of these achieves escape velocity; the Kingskerswell bypass, or the Ashington railway line. But for anyone who needs to travel past Arundel, sorry, maybe next decade!

National Highways seeks market input on new £6bn scheme delivery framework National Highways is seeking market engagement on a new £6bn framework to deliver renewals and improvements across the strategic road network (SRN). The Scheme Delivery Framework 2 (SDF2) will replace its current Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) and Pavement Delivery Framework (PDF), which are due to come to an end in September 2027 and December 2027 respectively. It may also include smaller technical, surveys and testing (TST) contracts. The original SDF, which commenced in 2021, was worth £3.6bn and saw 50 suppliers appointed including WSP, Jacobs, Kier, Amey, VolkerFitzpatrick, Morgan Sindall and Colas. Almost a quarter (23%) of the places were taken up by SMEs. The PDF, which commenced in 2022, was worth £1.3bn and saw 12 appointees including Aggregate Industries, FM Conway, Galliford Try and Tarmac. The TST contracts are individual and “contribute to the success of scheme information for both SDF and PDF” according to National Highways. The road infrastructure body continued: “All of these frameworks and contracts enable National Highways to deliver renewals and small improvements across a range of activities, including substantial civil and structural works, pavement, barriers and drainage, traffic management activities and design services for a range of projects.” SDF2 will combine these frameworks and will provide “an exciting opportunity for existing and new suppliers” according to National Highways. https://lnkd.in/eNB_GrKa

Thanks for the update. I believe that this is an excellent infrastructure project, but is a very large chunk of deficit increasing funding. Meaning that there is not funding for so many other projects throughout the Nation. Why? Because we should not be increasing the deficit every time we need funding for an infrastructure project. Time to implement a different way to fund much needed infrastructure projects. HR 4052, the creation of the Nation’s fifth National Infrastructure Bank. The NIB will fund all of the Country’s infrastructure outside of the budget and keeping to increase the Nation’s deficit. Check out - nibcoalition.com. #nationalinfrastructurebank
