LIV Golf has recently taken a significant step forward by securing its first major TV deals, marking a significant milestone for the new tour. This strategic move positions them strongly on the global golf stage and provides them with the opportunity to reach a broader audience through various TV platforms. Simultaneously, the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour have intensified their efforts to compete and maintain their positions as leaders in the golf world. By constantly evolving their events and adapting to changes in the industry, they aim to retain and attract new fans. The ongoing efforts of these major players in the golf sphere create an exciting dynamic within the industry. Notably, this development has also strengthened the position of players in the golf landscape. As the competition between these entities heats up, players may find themselves in a more advantageous position, with increased opportunities and support in the ever-evolving world of professional golf. #sportbusiness #golf

A decline in golf viewership for the Masters is no surprise⛳️📉 Statistics reveal a nuanced picture: The 2023 Masters peaked at approximately 15 million viewers compared to the recent 9.589 million in 2024... The absence of a merger between LIV Golf and the PGA TOUR continues to cast a shadow over the sport's landscape. Some interesting figures: — The final round of the PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open drew just 2.38 million viewers, a stunning 35% plunge from the previous year — The Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill was watched by 2.29 million on its closing day, a 30% dip from 2023 and the tournament’s worst fourth-round number in seven years. Simply, the fact that the best players in the world are not convening very often is not helping the PGA Tour or LIV Golf. The implications are clear: without a unified front, golf risks losing its grip on both existing and potential audiences. The sport's future hinges on its ability to adapt, innovate, and ultimately, bring fans together under one banner. Let me know your thoughts on the state of play. Did you watch the final round? 🏌♂️⛳️ #Golf #Viewership #LIVGolf #PGATour #SportsIndustry

LIV Golf, what to make of it. Is it turning golf on its head, or is it just a sideshow making a lot of noise and will soon fizzle out? Things took an interesting turn this week with LIV golfer Talor Gooch claiming that if Rory McIlroy wins the Masters next month, there will be an asterisk against his victory because not all the best players were in the field. So, following Gooch's logic, could you argue that could be said for every Masters champion who won while Tiger Woods wasn't in the field as he recovered from various injuries? Whatever Gooch says and thinks, he wouldn't have qualified because of his current world ranking, plus he didn't play in any events outside LIV. Does Gooch have a point, or is it just sour grapes because he didn't receive an invite? The other big LIV news this week concerns the return of Anthony Kim. Once heralded as the next biggest thing, Kim's star shone brightest in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Kim disappeared from golf in 2012, through a mixture of injury and questionable recreational activities, remaining in exile until turning up in Jeddah this week for the latest LIV event. LIV has long trumpeted its ability to attract the best players in the world, and they could have been winning that argument with the $500 million capture of Jon Rahm, but what signal does it send out bringing in Anthony Kim? LIV have brought Kim to compete as an individual while he gets his competitive juices flowing again, but will Kim do anything other than prop up the rest of the field for the tournaments he'll play in? Who knows, it is a real 50/50. If Kim plays great, it's an incredibly smart move by LIV. If Kim had looked to get back on the PGA Tour, the road would have been long, playing through the various mini-tours to fight his way back to the big time with no guarantees of success. As we head into March and just over a month to the Masters, the world of professional golf continues to intrigue us. #golflife #professionalgolf #golfblogger #livgolf #pgatour

I understand the economics of TV broadcast orights and the potential to a sports organizations bottom line. But the world has moved on from a few channels and staying home to watch any sports event let alone golf. I’m hardly a Gen Z or millennial and I can’t remember the last time I watched golf on TV, I stream it and take it with me on my phone so I can be active not a coach potato- ratings are down and I predict they haven’t bottomed out yet. One reason is streaming, another is there is that much more competition on what to watch and another is the golf media not doing a great job of making it compeling if certain players aren’t in the event, in addition Network coverage has too many commercials and non-engaging commentary. It also is easy to check leaderboards and see if there is a reason to watch - favourite players, close competition, etc. Yes, too there is more golf product available - it is a conundrum for professional golf although not as much for the game itself. If you were to add all the numbers last weekend around the world on all outlets for The Solheim Cup, The Irish Open, LIV championship, PGA TOUR, Champions Tour, Legends Tour, etc. not one was outstanding but total would eclipse numbers engaged in professional golf from a decade ago. (Before the Golf Channel & streaming there was virtually no overseas golf available in the US) The challenge for the organizations in the professional game is providing profitable metrics and value for their sponsors and partners by delivering the message in non-traditional mediums (especially challenging with escalating purses) See you watching on your phone while out playing on the #links!!! #golftravel #travelforegolf #experiencethedestination #letustakeyouthere #tvrevenue PGA TOUR PGA of America DP World Tour Legends Tour LIV Golf Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Ladies European Tour Peacock NBC Sports #golf #professionalgolf The R&A Sky United States Golf Association (USGA) Champions Golf Tour Ryan Ballengee Golf News Net
TV ratings for men's golf were horrible last week. Atrocious. The PGA Tour purse was down significantly, too. The market is making a lot of things clear, and I wrote about that for GNN members.
