Flourishing In The America the Beautiful Freshwater Challenge: A Partnership to Conserve and Restore America’s Rivers, Lakes, Streams, and Wetlands announced today https://lnkd.in/d93hBqDF "...the Biden-Harris Administration is setting bold, new national goals that help rebuild our nation’s wetlands and freshwater resources: 1) Reconnect, restore, and protect 8 million acres of wetlands by 2030, with an emphasis on forested, vegetated, peat soil, brackish, and tidal wetlands; and 2) Reconnect, restore, and protect 100,000 miles of our nations’ rivers and streams by 2030,using approaches like removal of impediments and stream bank restoration." This is a bold step in the right direction. Our goal must be bolder than just slowing or reducing damage to nature and communities, but to reach a future where we and nature flourish together.

Today is World Rivers Day, an opportunity to celebrate our waterways here in Cambridge 💧 Did you know that 80% of the world’s chalk streams can be found in England, with the majority of them here in the South East? 🌍 We’re committed to protecting and enhancing the environment for the benefit of customers now and in the future. Newly launched campaign sets out to make Scotland the world’s first “rewilding nation.” The Scottish Rewilding Alliance is urging the Scottish government to declare Scotland a Rewilding Nation, committing to nature recovery across 30% of our land and seas to benefit nature, climate and people. Learn more - https://www.rewild.scot/ About 6,000 years ago, most of southern Scotland was covered by broadleaf woodland, interspersed with patches of rich scrub, heath and bog. In stark contrast, the landscape today is nature-depleted hills, with highly degraded sheep-grazed areas (so called ‘sheep-wrecked’ landscapes) and blocks of non-native spruce plantations. With this campaign Scotland could be a world leader in rewilding its landscapes, ensuring clean air and water, storing carbon, reducing flooding, restoring wildlife and improving the lives of locals. On #worldenvironmentday it's fantastic to hear more about the continued investment in our Greenfields Project, where we are investing in reforesting 20 hectares of land and in enriching a Site of Special Scientific area as a haven for wildlife; all in an area very close to my heart, the stunning Yorkshire Dales 🌲💚. It's not just about planting trees, it's a key part of our Mission Zero strategy in compensating for the unavoidable emissions we create as a business. The short term focus, of course, remains in reducing our emissions across our office usage, supply chain, travel and the technology solutions we design, build and run for our clients. We're also doing this to learn about how AI and advanced data capabilities can help in the battle to protect biodiversity. We are looking to obtain practical insights which can be shared out into the conservation community, via our partners; as well as how we can translate any proven solutions to new contexts to help our clients accelerate their decarbonisation and conservation objectives. As climate change affects more lives, livelihoods, and areas, we will face the reality that land and natural ecosystems will change too. Systems innovation approaches can help us address the challenges we are facing, as the approach supports communicating complex and wicked challenges. As nature adapts, will human systems adapt too? How quickly human life can adapt to new weather extremes varies and depends on multiple factors such as socioeconomic conditions and the implementation of mitigation/prevention strategies. Where we can use systems innovation approaches to design and implement strategies more effectively with relational and long-term thinking. Through this initiative, the Administration has set national goals to rebuild our nation’s wetlands and freshwater resources: 1) Reconnect, restore, and protect 8 million acres of wetlands by 2030, with an emphasis on forested, vegetated, peat soil, brackish, and tidal wetlands; and 2) Reconnect, restore, and protect 100,000 miles of our nations’ rivers and streams by 2030, using approaches like removal of impediments and stream bank restoration.

If water is the lifeblood of the planet, rivers, lakes and wetlands are the hard-working systems that keep it pumping. These systems feed communities, shape cultures and sustain the diversity of life on Earth. For too long, we’ve undervalued our freshwater ecosystems. But there is hope. Freshwater systems that are degraded can recover—and they can recover quickly. Fresh water is connected to everything TNC does. This #WorldWaterDay, like every single day we are committed to the protection, restoration and improved management of 2.5 million hectares of rivers, lakes and wetlands in Australia by 2030. Today is World Wetlands Day! In its honour, we want to shine a light on a large-scale project to restore damaged and degraded peatland that has kicked off at South West Water’s Burrator Reservoir! The work, being carried out by the South West Peatland Partnership, will see a range of interventions introduced at the 208-acre site to store water in the environment, creating peatland bogs. The peatlands in the South West provide many benefits: they protect water quality in rivers and reservoirs by preventing run-off from the land, they absorb and store carbon dioxide, and they provide habitats for wildlife, aiding biodiversity! This is why we need to help restore and protect them. The South West Peatland Partnership is a £13 million project delivering peatland restoration in the South West of England. It is a collaboration between us here at South West Water, local and regional government agencies, non-governmental organisations, businesses, landowners and farmers.
