Is this the answer to what underserved communities need to begin creating wealth? There's a wide variety of Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). CDFIs generally fund development projects, including affordable housing and urban retail. They also focus on small business growth, particularly for black and brown business owners. At NJCC, we even have a non-profit that develops properties, creating opportunities for black and brown people to buy their first home. CDFIs are committed to fostering economic stability and growth in underserved communities. #MyWhy #Nonprofits and #smallbusinesses are already addressing some of our community's hairiest problems. The next question is, "How can public funds be used to help the helpers build towards sustainability?" The Direct Care Worker project highlighted in my last post is one of a series of responses that my agency is activating to do just this: leverage public dollars to not only provide quality services but also to reinforce #economicgrowth & #communitytransformation -- Support healthy small businesses -- Create opportunities for nonprofits to activate mission-aligned, fee-generating social enterprises = Transform the life trajectories of generations AND Support older adults to #ageinplace . This is one of a series of models you will continue to see coming from #alleghenycounty #AreaAgencyOnAging #dhs #dhsagingservices

Effective neighborhood development isn't just limited to resident engagement or housing issues. Neighborhood development, from an Asset-based approach, includes economic development, human services, faith-based community building, social center creation, small business cultivation, commercial revitalization, non-profit development, educational opportunity growth, and so much more! Don't limit your neighborhood assets to only resident and homeowner interests. Effective development seeks the sustainable intersection of all of these interests. #neighborhooddevelopment #ABCD #engagement #reflections
