@Inhabitect is proud of our ongoing partnership with The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay and the pivotal role we played in the Kid's Creek Riparian Restoration and Wetland Enhancement Project. By leveraging our expertise in sustainable design and green infrastructure, our team has been working hard to restore the natural habitat, improve water quality, and enhance the overall health of our local ecosystem. The project is in a degraded wetland, along a major tributary to Grand Traverse Bay, that was almost entirely comprised of invasive species and devoid of a natural riparian buffer following historic farming activities and development. To help restore this area and combat the detrimental effects of pollutants in stormwater runoff, a 1-acre engineered wetland now pre-treats and filters over 1.1 million gallons of stormwater per year, before it enters the creek that eventually flows into #GrandTraverseBay. We also restored 4800 linear feet of stream by installing a riparian buffer consisting of 457 trees, 1050 shrubs, 1500 live stakes, 3078 plugs, and 1.4 acres of native seed! In addition, we installed 6 habitat/wildlife structures and treated 4.5 acres of invasive species! Wave hello next time you see our team installing more trees, performing maintenance, or monitoring the process of our installations at Kids Creek near @Meijer along Silver Lake Road in #TraverseCity! #nativeplants #landscapedesign #ecologicallandscaping #plantingtrees #designbuildgrow #nativetrees #ecologicalrestoration #wetlandrestoration #stormwatermanagement #riparianrestoration #greeninfrastructure https://lnkd.in/gsKn_gMg

The Northern Redbelly Dace and the Blackside Darter—two state-threatened fish species—are getting much-needed habitat enhancements at the Gary Gulch Game Production Area in Deuel County. We were grateful to play a part in this effort alongside RESPEC and the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks. Our role included: ✅ Conducting a baseline stream assessment of Gary Creek ✅ Performing wetland delineation services to identify and map wetland and stream boundaries ✅ Securing Section 404 permitting for placement of habitat structures in the creek The project addresses challenges facing the stream—like sedimentation, bank erosion, and declining riparian vegetation—and will create healthier stream conditions for these fish species. Construction is underway, and we look forward to seeing this collaborative effort improve in-stream habitat conditions. #EngineeringABetterCommunity #SDGFP #WildlifeConservation #NorthernRedbellyDace #BlacksideDarter #GaryGulchProject

A pioneering river restoration project on the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate in Somerset has delivered dramatic benefits for both wildlife and local communities in just 12 months. Over 10 football pitches’ worth of new wetlands have been created, leading to a remarkable 1,800% increase in aquatic habitat. The restored floodplain now plays a key role in slowing water flow, improving water quality and reducing flood risk for downstream communities. The project has turned what was once a neat, sterile landscape into a dynamic 'messy' ecosystem, teeming with life. Species such as water voles, wildfowl and even green sandpipers are thriving in the new habitat, alongside an array of birds, insects and plants. The constant supply of water has also resulted in the site being very green and lush with thousands of wildflowers, like wild carrot, providing food for pollinators. After being tested during England’s wettest 18-month period on record, the restored landscape not only withstood the extreme weather but helped prevent floods and droughts by storing and releasing water naturally. “We had just the worst winter you can imagine post restoration in terms of the number of storms and sheer volume of rain," says Ben Eardley project manager at the National Trust. "The site responded really well... demonstrating the value of the restoration in providing resilience to hydrological extremes.” Sharing our news via BBC Countryfile. The MWRD and the Forest Preserves of Cook County are partnering on a feasibility study in southeast Cook County for a collaborative project to provide flood relief, restore the local ecology and create new outdoor recreational opportunities for neighboring communities. “We are excited to launch the Deer Creek-Third Creek Reservoir feasibility study with our partners at the Forest Preserves of Cook County to promote resilience and the beauty of the Southland,” said MWRD President Commissioner Kari Steele. “We look forward to evaluating a project of this magnitude that can potentially mitigate flooding and yield multiple benefits.” This 20-month study will assess the potential for the MWRD and the Forest Preserves to coordinate and share costs for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of a Deer Creek-Third Creek Reservoir. If feasible, the system would provide naturalized stormwater storage for flood-prone communities in nearby Glenwood, Ford Heights, Lansing, Thornton, South Holland, Calumet City, Dolton and unincorporated areas. A remarkable landscape in the eastern Sierra Nevada is now protected forever. Trust for Public Land preservation of Sardine Meadow is a monumental win for California’s stunning mountain landscapes, vital watersheds, and communities. These 569 acres of protected meadows and streams will safeguard clean drinking water, and serve as natural defense against drought, fire, and floods. But this work is not just about 30x30 or restoring a landscape—it ensures people can connect with the outdoors through nearby hiking and cycling, for generations to come. https://lnkd.in/g2_jtReD

🌄 Restoring with Respect: The Rollover Approach at Longcliffe At Longcliffe, we're dedicated to more than just transforming landscapes. Our commitment to environmental stewardship is at the heart of our quarry restoration efforts. By adopting the 'Rollover' method, we’re proud to contribute to the evolving practices that blend ecological care with the natural beauty of the Derbyshire Dales' landscape. This innovative approach progressively restores quarry benches into gentle, rolling slopes that blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. But it's not just about looks. The rollover slopes make the areas more accessible for biodiversity to flourish. Since debuting this method with our Aldwark quarry restoration in 2020, the benefits have been clear. The softer, more natural contours not only improve the visual impact of former quarry sites but also create rich habitats for wildlife. Field grasses, wildflowers, bats, stoats, voles, and kestrels are just a few examples of the resurgence of life in these restored areas. Our commitment to this approach is ongoing. This is more than a restoration technique; it's a commitment to Longcliffe's dedication to environmental stewardship and community values. With each rollover slope, we're not just giving back to the land; we're ensuring it thrives for decades to come. #Longcliffe #InnovationInRestoration #RolloverSlopes #SustainableQuarrying #BiodiversityBoost

We talk a lot about the important role that prescribed fire has on our landscapes, but good fire is just one tool in our vegetation management strategy. We often prepare for fire by creating shaded fuel breaks – reducing surface and ladder fuels in strategic locations to slow fire spread and create buffer zones. This winter, we worked with the talented teams at Spye General Engineering and Hanford to implement the Rodger’s Ridge Shaded Fuel Break at our Live Oaks Ranch Preserve. The one-mile-long, 16-acre stretch is a prominent ridgeline between Knight’s Valley and Calistoga, and is critical to slowing the movement of wildfire into the nearby city. We will now be able use the shaded fuel break as an anchor for prescribed fire and forest health thinning on an adjacent 22-acre hillside, which will reinforce the ridgeline work. We secured funding from the Natural Resource Conservation Service and Sonoma County Ag + Open Space District’s Vegetation Management Grant Program to implement this multi-benefit project, preparing it for prescribed burning in partnership with Northern Sonoma Fire District in fall 2024. Returning good fire to our landscapes is the most effective method to improve forest health and build resilience to future wildfires. https://lnkd.in/gYwyyuYU MFA is so proud to be a part of the mussel bed restoration project currently underway in Te Tauihu. The linked video showcases the latest deployment in Mohua/Golden Bay this year. The Mussel Bed Restoration Project aims to restore wild Greenshell mussel beds that were over-fished in the past. Mussels are the building blocks of many coastal environments and provide a number of critical ecosystem services including providing habitat, stabilising the seabed and filtering the water. Whilst farmed mussels provide the same ecosystem services, restoration of the wild beds will only provide further benefits. A secondary benefit of thriving wild mussel beds is the production of juvenile mussels (known as spat) that can then be caught and grown on marine farms.
