IIT Roorkee Signs MoUs to Preserve, Promote and Revitalise Craft, Culture, Heritage and Tourism in Uttarakhand IIT Roorkee has recently signed three significant Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) and the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB), all aimed at driving transformative initiatives in craft revitalization, tourism, and public art. These collaborations align with the Institute’s broader vision of integrating design, technology, and culture to create societal impact and foster sustainable development. These three MoUs, championed by the Department of Design (under the headship of Prof. Apurbba Kumar Sharma and Prof. Inderdeep Singh), and initiated by Prof. Smriti Saraswat demonstrate IIT Roorkee’s commitment to fostering collaboration between academia, government, and local communities to drive sustainable development. These initiatives are exemplary illustrations of bringing diverse stakeholders together; telling immersive stories through transdisciplinary overlaps and narrative design; creating unique identity for the Himalayan State of Uttarakhand, focusing on tourism, through diverse lenses, such as – craft; culture; architecture; design; sustainable livelihoods; smart villages; and, vibrant villages.   Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, emphasized the significance of these initiatives, stating, “These MoUs reflect IIT Roorkee’s commitment to leveraging innovation, culture, and technology to advance societal goals. Initiatives like craft revitalization, public art, and culturally rich designs underscore our alignment with national priorities such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Dekho Apna Desh, and Vocal for Local." Odisha's ambition to emerge as a tourism hub is commendable. With the recent backing from the Union Finance Ministry, the state is focusing on unlocking untapped tourism clusters, extending beyond the traditional circuit of Puri, Konark, and Bhubaneswar. The scenic treasures of Hirakud, Satkosia Gorge, Bhitarkanika, and Deomali, among others, are primed to attract a broader range of high-end tourists. However, the state’s current infrastructure struggles to retain such visitors, signalling a critical need for collaboration with private players. This shift towards developing tourism clusters while engaging local communities could serve as a blueprint for inclusive growth. The involvement of private players can drive sustainable tourism development. In my view, the true success of this initiative will hinge on balancing rapid development with the protection of Odisha’s natural and cultural assets. By fostering responsible tourism, Odisha has the potential to create lasting value—economically, socially, and environmentally. We must look beyond traditional models and adopt a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach to truly unlock the state’s tourism potential for a global audience. Odisha is sitting on a tourism goldmine with its vast natural landscapes, cultural richness, and unexplored beauty. To me, this is an opportunity to redefine how tourism development can be inclusive and sustainable. Wondering if Indian village tourism is more of a content game or a developmental logistics game? For over a decade, several startups and corporates have been working in rural areas. The question is, has there been a significant behavioral shift among villagers toward adopting sustainable practices and using modern technologies? A brilliant example is Dhordo, a village in Kutch, which has been transformed into one of the United Nations World Tourism Organization's (UNWTO) Best Tourism Villages. This transformation was driven by an exceptional content strategy led by Shri. Narendra Modi, who, as Gujarat's Chief Minister, promoted the Rann of Kutch, followed by the development of traditional hut structures called Bhonga, which formed the Tent City and the ecosystem around it, signifying the beauty of the White Desert, i.e., salt pans spread across vast lands in Gujarat. Through Modi's leadership, he kickstarted a multicultural Rann Utsav, which is a winter festival featuring handicrafts, traditional music, folk dances, local cuisine, and Kutch's natural beauty in a cinematic style. Initially a 3-day event, it has now grown into a 100+ day celebration, attracting thousands of visitors annually from India and abroad. Shri Modi's strategic promotion, supported by the super celebrity Shri. Amitabh Bachchan's iconic tagline, "Kutch Nahi Dekha Toh Kuch Nahi Dekha", shows how a strong content focus can turn even remote regions into top tourist destinations. This scenario shows that while development is an important aspect, a content marketing plan can bring in tourists and significantly contribute to the nation's economy. I was watching a panel discussion on the state of Assam's tourism and things to be done, on a local TV channel last night. Some insightful thoughts did surface but sad to see there is no deep diving into the marketing side of the story. Well, a true reflection of how the stakeholders' mindset works here. Travel isn't just about checking boxes on your bucket list anymore; it's about collecting moments that become part of your personal narrative. The modern traveller doesn't want to see the one-horned rhino in Kaziranga. They want to understand conservation efforts, track animal movements with rangers, and perhaps even name a baby rhino. They're not satisfied with just watching Bihu dancers perform; they want to learn the steps, understand the harvest traditions behind the festival, and share meals with local families. This shift from passive sightseeing to immersive experiences reflects a more profound change in how we perceive travel. Today's tourists are seeking authenticity in an increasingly digital world. The success of a trip is no longer measured by the number of landmarks photographed but by the depth of stories you bring back. Did you learn how to weave a traditional gamosa? Did you ask a tea taster to teach you hiw to distinguish between the first and the second flush? Did you spend an evening with mask makers in Majuli, understanding the craft? In this new age of experiential travel, destinations that offer authentic, hands-on experiences will thrive. It's about who you become through what you experience. The future of tourism belongs to places that don't just show but involve; don't just tell but engage; don't just welcome visitors but transform them into participants in their living heritage. More importantly, stress should be on how these saleable stories are crafted, packaged, and distributed across relevant media to reach those who seek what you can offer.
