The idea that the government exists to solve social problems broke the Welfare State from the beginning. The resulting financialization of public goods and services through Regan and Thatcherism further complicated and corrupted the process. At its heart conversations about poverty are issues central to the quality of democracy. Where is power centered in the settlement, whose power, and how does power operate in it? There is no reform of welfare without a radical reform of power in our ideas of what and who’s welfare were talking about.

By neglecting critical public services like healthcare, education, and social welfare in favor of extracting short-term tax revenue, the government is creating a powder keg of social unrest and instability. Without access to quality public goods, the marginalized segments of the population will feel increasingly abandoned and disenfranchised by the state. This can fuel the growth of parallel power structures, criminal networks, and even extremist movements that seek to fill the void left by the state's abdication of its responsibilities.
