Between homelessness prevention to affordable Housing, there are a range of actions and services that take place everyday in our region to try and break the cycle of homelessness and suffering. HomeAid San Diego along with 18 other affiliates around the country, work to provide housing, education, employment and essential care products to over 22,000 people, in 2023, across the U.S. at-risk of or experiencing homelessness. This Continuum of Care graphic provides a nice visual of how we need to come together, across sectors, to assess each of these pillars and determine where more or less resources should be directed. Yesterday the 100 in 100 initiative was launched in Grand Rapids. “An effort to house 100 individuals who are experiencing homelessness in 100 days with an intentional focus on chronic homelessness.” So encouraging to see this private/public partnership. Homelessness is a community-wide problem, and the entire community needs to be part of the solution. Breaking Barriers: Empowering Street and Homeless Children for a Better Tomorrow! On this International Street Children Day, let's shed light on the realities faced by these resilient young souls. While 'street children' and 'homeless children' are sometimes used interchangeably, there are important distinctions between the two. Not all homeless children live openly on the streets; many find themselves in hidden circumstances, such as sleeping on floors or in temporary accommodations like hostels. Shockingly, in 2018, around 9,500 children in the UK spent Christmas in hostels or temporary housing, often facing cramped living conditions and sharing facilities with strangers. Join us in raising awareness about this issue and providing essential support to empower street and homeless children. This week we're counting down the top 5 steps for Victoria to make the leap to a society that has ended homelessness. The best (and most cost-effective) way to end homelessness is to stop it from happening in the first place. And one of the key ways to do that is to prevent unnecessary evictions.  In Victoria, the Private Rental Assistance Program, the Tenancy Assistance and Advocacy Program, and TenancyPlus are saving thousands of people from homelessness right now. But demands on these programs far exceed their funding. We need to increase funding to these programs to ensure they work as effectively as possible, saving Victorians from the trauma of homelessness and taking strain off the rest of the homelessness system. Adequate income support from the federal Government also has a vital role to play in ensuring households can meet their basic costs. What's been your experience with eviction-prevention programs? End homelessness in America. We believe ending homelessness in America begins with a sandwich. Our goal, beyond simply providing a PB&J sandwich to those in need, is to acknowledge and recognize the often overlooked homeless individuals and families in our community. When you see those experiencing homeless, one of the questions you may ask yourself is, “What more can I do?” We pray that what begins with a PB&J sandwich grows into much more for those who serve. In small ways, each of us can address homelessness in America. And together, we can end it. Our approach covers three initiatives to fulfill our vision: Educate Advocate Allocate Education represents increasing public awareness. Advocate is increasing support to not only host a PB&J Day, but to seek policy change and expanded community support to develop solutions. Allocate is the giving of our time, talent, and treasure (physical or monetary resources) to support PB&J Days and beyond. The High School You Don’t See Imagine a high school you can’t see, where no bells are ringing, no teachers, and no students. Instead, there is silence. Silence that speaks volumes about the invisible crisis of youth homelessness. 958 young people are turned away each year from Project Youth. 958 - That's equivalent to an entire high school left empty. The empty halls echoing with a crisis hidden in plain sight. It's easy to overlook the high school you don't see. After all, homelessness doesn't always look the way we expect it to. It's not always sleeping rough. Sometimes, it's hidden in the shadows in our own community with young people sleeping on couches or in unsafe and overcrowded housing. Every young person deserves a safe place to call home.
