When Daniel Baker opened Reuters Events Pharma Europe 2024 last Tuesday morning he kicked things off with an audience poll. “What matters most?” Unsurprisingly the top choice was patients. That’s a good thing as they have to be our industry’s North Star. But guess what the bottom choice was? Improving accessibility and affordability. Maybe people saw that as the same thing as patient-centred solutions. Maybe they didn’t want to split the vote as they saw the real-time polling evolve. Or maybe they don’t think that pharma plays a key role in everyone’s health, just those that align with our short term interests. That the opening address from Stefan Oelrich of Bayer spoke passionately for the value our industry delivered to society during the Covid pandemic felt at odds with the seeming dismissal of our wider responsibilities - especially the world’s poor. Yes, we need revenue to invest in discovery and profit to encourage innovation, and that extends to how we scale production and improve efficiency. But I would have hoped we would have put the goal of helping all patients at the top of that list (or at least not at the bottom).
