At inKind, we believe in honoring the diverse histories and cultures of our employees and partners. For Juneteenth, an employee resource group came together to host a powerful panel discussion that highlighted the significance of this historic day and why it's essential to amplify Black and African American stories and experiences. The agenda included a catered lunch by Community Vegan which is a local Austin Black-Owned vegan food truck. We then played a trivia game that focused on black history, followed by a how-to-learn session that outlined guidelines for creating a safe space to learn. We were joined by two guest speakers Chris, from Ember, and Marlon, the founder of Community Vegan, for a fireside chat. They talked about how they honor their culinary heritage to help contribute to a sense of solidarity and connection, their personal stories, and how they celebrate Juneteenth. It's an opportunity to foster a sense of belonging and unity within our workplace, showing our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. By listening to and learning from these experiences, we can work towards creating a more equitable and inclusive environment for everyone. It is a reminder that “nobody is free until everybody is free.” This day should be celebrated as the day when all Americans were liberated. It is a day to reflect, learn, and grow. Celebrate by supporting black-owned businesses. Educate yourself and those around you on Black History. This week, the Black@ ERG at Envoy, sponsored a fireside chat between the incredibly impressive Nicole Senior, VP Inclusion & Culture at Tinder, Sinohe Terrero, COO & CFO at Envoy and myself. The theme was Black Tech Evolved: Trailblazing a Future Beyond Barriers. I left struck by three things: 1️⃣ 2024 is where we separate the authentic leaders from the fair weather followers in diversity, equity and inclusion. It was striking to see Envoy continue to go all in on building a diverse and inclusive workforce at a time when budgets and political winds are causing many of their peers to turn back. That’s probably because their commitment comes from Founder and CEO, Larry Gadea’s vision right from the start, rather than a “follow the fad” DEI blitz of 2020. 2️⃣ An inclusive tide lifts all boats. Efforts to build a workplace with more equitable hiring and diverse perspectives creates a space where it is easier for anyone to win. And it’s fun to see just how much Envoy is winning, despite the macro economic climate around them! 3️⃣ There’s a fun and earnestness to the culture that seeps through every person I met. I think Envoy’s success has had as much to do with who they are, as what they do. PSA: If you don’t know about Envoy, you should!

When I was 18, an article I wrote about how Black people can reconnect with agriculture was published; one day before Blach History Month. There were many Black farmers; however, during the 1900s, that number declined. This has been attributed to various discrimination practices within the USDA when it comes to farming loans. Farming is REALLY hard to do, if not impossible without access to capital. The discrimination behind those loans is something that those farmers are STILL receiving compensation for as recently as 2023. Today, there are more opportunities, but I still think it's hard being a Black professional in the food industry/agriculture. You're going to be scrutinized more than others. You're going to be under a microscope. You're going to do things that may be okay for your other coworkers but not acceptable for you. You're going to experience microagressions in the workplace. Things may have improved since my Grandmother was a sharecropper, but Black professionals in agriculture & the food industry still face tremendous challenges. How can everyone play their part? When you see unfair behavior, call it out. When someone has a concern, don't dismiss it. To often if we personally haven't experienced something, we may not think it exists. By embracing empathy and open-mindedness, we can begin to dismantle the barriers that hinder progress. It’s not enough to be non-racist; we must be actively anti-racist, working to identify and challenge the systems and behaviors that perpetuate discrimination. I am excited to reimagine how we celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth this year – and to share that experience with you. This reimagining was born from reflecting on what it means to be a Black, queer and trans person from the American South. The legacies, power and unsung heroes that are held in that space. These reflections on the intersectional nature of the Black experience have come into focus even more these last few weeks with Claudine Gay's forced resignation. Because her being a Black woman has led to the disproportionate level of scrutiny she has faced, and a deeper analysis of history will show you that there are countless Claudine Gays out there whose narratives have yet to be heard. Uncovering lesser known narratives of Black trailblazers, highlighting how Black people have always led advocacy movements, along with uplifting the ways Black folks have continually built community in the face of struggle is the core of what Black History Month means to me. 💌 Thats why I am inviting you to The Cookout this February: A curated learning space I developed exclusively for Black History Month. Why The Cookout? Cookouts are gatherings that symbolize more than just delicious food; they embody the spirit of inter-generational learning and possibility for Black people, and those who are invited to join. Cookouts are spaces where everyday Black history is made – and told – by families, neighbors and community leaders alike. They are a place where Black joy is nurtured in its purest form. Being “invited to the cookout” by a Black person is an honor, as it is an invitation into a designated safe space that is anchored in a shared understanding of fellowship. The number one rule of coming to the cookout is that you don’t show up empty-handed because the cookout is about giving, not taking more from Black spaces and Black people. So when you show-up to The Cookout ask yourself “What am I bringing with me to share with others?” Here are some favorite side dishes I encourage you to bring: 👉🏾 An authentic approach to learning that pushes you to challenge your preconceived notions of Black people, history & culture. 👉🏾A commitment to centering Black voices. 👉🏾A genuine sense of curiosity and humility.
