“He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight” - Sun Tzu I have recently completed a grueling 31-day international amateur radio competition (Ham Awards - WWA 2025) and am very pleased with my performance. Out of over 153,000 global competitors, I placed 5,324 in the Over-all mixed category and 1,049 in the Digital category. For the Philippine competitors, I placed 11th and 10th for the mixed and digital categories out of 245 competitors. I competed with fellow amateurs who had full licenses, better equipment, experience and locations. Knowing that I was constrained by my license class to 3 frequency bands, I chose to compete purely in the digital category using WSJT-X FT8 and FT4 modes. In spite of some encouragement from some fellow hams, I stuck to these modes and frequencies knowing my strengths and weaknesses. After all, I’ve only been in the hobby for less than a year. I think the performance was quite good under the circumstances. I chose to compete where I was strong. This is an attitude which we should bring into all our endeavors. At work, I had encountered a question from a boss which goes, “Is that the hill you want to die on?” I know the question refers to resolve but I believe the premise is all wrong. We don’t want to die on any hill, period. We should prefer to continue living, hence choosing the circumstances to work and compete. We plan and strengthen ourselves by learning and honing our skills all the time. Don’t plan to die. Plan to live and win. An idea a day.

Last week I had the absolute honor of not only getting to see my daughter compete at a national level, but was also able to help as a judge for the National Speech and Debate Association, 2024 National Tournament. The entire experience really brought a few things to my attention: 1. We have some absolutely amazing minds in this generation that is coming up. They were absolutely incredible to see. 2. The skills they are learning, both in Speech events and Debate events, are such assets to the workplace. They have an amazing ability to see things from different perspectives, convey confidence, and persuade you to hear their voice and their view point. 3. There is nothing more educational, than to try something, and have to work hard to succeed at it, even through failures. The entire competition was over 6,700 of the best student speakers. So many of them came and gave 100%, but not all walked away with the trophy at the end. The thing that stood out to me most the whole week was how many of them truly still walked away with smiles, motivated, and absolutely hungry to come back and show us what they have again next year. This lesson of how to learn through failure is such an asset. This is the live stream from several of the speech events. Thought of the day: No one has a divine right to victory ✌️ Watching Euro 2024 has been a masterclass in humility and the dangers of complacency. Portugal, England, and France—powerhouses of soccer—have all stumbled against opponents they were expected to dominate. In business, as in sports, past victories don't guarantee future wins. The landscape is constantly shifting, with new challengers emerging and unexpected disruptions occurring. Companies that rest on their laurels and assume their dominance will continue are often caught off guard when the underdogs start to outmaneuver them. The lesson from Euro 2024 is clear: There are no guarantees in any arena. Success requires a combination of talent, hard work, adaptability, and a healthy dose of humility — qualities we strive to cultivate at Ionia.
