Looking at U.S. News & World Report's top global universities, I note that two of the top 10 have I-Houses: University of California, Berkeley (#5) and Columbia (#9, International House New York). Granted, the I-Houses may have only played a small part in receiving such high rankings. At the same time, I believe that our history with these campuses in creating a space where students can build intercultural relationships based on respect did positively affect these universities' international reputation. And while that is a powerful benefit, the true value of I-Houses lies in the relationships forged and the broader perspective our residents gain and use to build a more just and peaceful world. CS + Econ @ Stanford | Finalist of Female Founders Across Borders'23 | Uzbekistan Ministry of Digital Technologies Ambassador
No, Stanford's acceptance rate is not 3.9% —not if you're international, not if you're asking for a for a full-ride scholarship. When I was applying to top US colleges, I knew that I was betting against all the odds, so I pushed myself even harder and analyzed every piece of application advice I could find to stand out from all the other applicants. Honestly, everyone around me thought I was crazy because no one from Uzbekistan previously got into Stanford as a first-year undergraduate student. Last year I was honored to become that first, and I am even more grateful that this year my admissions students got into Harvard, Duke, NYU, Cornell College, and more with full scholarships. Now, I want to share my insights on admissions with all students who want to apply to top US colleges. Therefore, I'll be doing a free live webinar on how to create a college application that will help you stand out among all high-achieving students. Mark 15th June at 8 PM GMT+5. Comment your email and I will send a link to the live webinar on 15th. You will also be able to ask your questions during the webinar.

When choosing a university, it’s easy to get caught up in the prestige of its history. 🏛️ But here’s the truth: the age of an institution isn’t the ultimate measure of its value. While centuries-old universities, like University of Cambridge, consistently rank high, contemporary institutions such as The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have swiftly gained global recognition despite their relatively recent establishment. Ultimately, what really matters is how well it aligns with YOU! 👊 Always consider the quality of the education provided, the opportunities available, and how well it supports your unique journey. Focus on finding the right fit for your aspirations, and remember, your success depends more on your dedication and vision than on the age of your alma mater!

President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester and Professor of Political Philosophy.
In this fourth short video reflecting on my joining The University of Manchester this August, I discuss how universities are catalysts for change in our world. How can we mobilize the ‘full stack’ of our resources to tackle global challenges? From reimagining student experiences to fostering multidisciplinary collaboration, the future of higher education is evolving. What role do you think universities should play in shaping our world? I’d be fascinated to hear your thoughts too. #TeamUoM #GlobalChallenges #HigherEdFuture

"The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows." Sydney.J.Harris I love this piece by Cate Gilpin- and it so resonates with why I went to university and why I am passionate about the future of #highereducation. Going to university was never negotiable for me - I've always loved #education and #learning and yearned for it. When I was 13, I stood up and told my English class that I was going to uni to study #communications at the University of Technology Sydney. Back then, the marks to get into the course were as high as Medicine - a hard ask for a student in love with humanities subjects. My classmates rolled their eyes and said "you just want to be the next Jana Wendt." They weren't too far wrong! Fast forward 6 years and I had the pleasure of 'standing on the shoulders of giants' - Andrew Olle, Jana Wendt, Wendy Bacon, Andrew Jakubowicz, Drusilla Modjeska were my lecturers. Universities are in a state of disruption and transformation - and the issues are vastly different to when I went to uni. But as I was reminded when I took my 15 year old son to an open day at University of Sydney last year - the magic - not only does it remain, it is more needed than ever. Current and future students need those of us who can make a difference to not only keep the magic alive but to take them to the next level where , #industryconnections, #digitaltechnologies and #academic leadership can synergise so that #lifelonglearning continues. The conversations led by Martin Betts at this week's HEDx conference are a vital step in this space. https://lnkd.in/gvGqkMn5 HEDx #university #highereducationleadership
Thank you to Campus Review for publishing my quite personal piece about universities, and how I very much hope they can become magical, transformative places again. Also, my deepest gratitude to Martin Betts and HEDx for supporting Welcoming Universities and keeping conversations about equity front and centre. https://lnkd.in/gNHprTpZ

"It seems, however, that the days of uncritical acceptance of the big three global rankings – THE, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and Shanghai, or maybe four if we count US News’ Best Global Universities – are coming to an end." Personally, I'm quite pleased about this. The way I see it, these rankings have long had an arbitrary and outsized effect on everything from #admissions and acceptance to #TNE development, #recognition and the awarding of grants and #scholarships. Though such rankings will still serve some purpose, I hope this change in attitude means we'll start seeing education authorities, institutions and other sector decision-makers around the world adopt more critical approaches to evaluating the standards (and standing) of qualifications and other programmes of learning. #IntlEd
