GMO is an acronym for genetically modified organisms. In agriculture, it describes modern day hybrids that are created using genetic engineering techniques. But technically, EVERYTHING you eat is a GMO. You wouldn’t have corn, strawberries, bananas, broccoli, if it weren’t for humans interfering and messing with the genetics of plants. Today, we use more precise techniques than randomly breeding or mutating seeds and hoping something good happens. In the US, there are ONLY 14 FDA-approved GM food products. (None of them are wheat, by the way. Not sure why people keep spreading easily fact-checkable lies). GM crops exist because they confer a benefit: to the crop, the planet, the farmers, or the consumers. For example, papaya was nearly eliminated because of the papaya ringspot virus. 90% of papayas today are GM: they can resist the virus that decimated their species. GM technology is WILDLY misunderstood, & that is used to spread fear about science & technologies that can improve our lives & our planet. Once people hear GMO, they see death, but the same people have been consuming canned foods, and so many things that can easily harm their health. In the olden days, the population of the world was small and people have food in abundance. As population increases, there's a higher demand on food and every other natural resources. Researcher scientists in agriculture have modified different genes of crops to come up with what we know as improved and disease resistant varieties. Crops that take lesser ti e to grow but maintain adequate yield. That's genetic modification. The only problem is when there's no regulation in research but since research is an ethical process, I think people should remove their bias and look on the benefits of GMOs. ~My take.

No comments allowed on this post so let’s talk! We’ve been farming for decades. 2 decades ago we transitioned away from row crop for a few reasons. Our last year we had to pay 3 times to have a field sprayed because it wasn’t working. Prior years showed the rising resistance to the products. Whether that was “weeds or bugs “ . The stacks became the way forward. Adding or snipping to create what the farm magazines were calling a “cocktail “. Mind you all during this journey the cost of this method was outrageous. We were assured that the research was expensive! We were told the high rate of cancer was not connected to our work. We were assured IF you do this their way you will reap wonderful rewards. Science is amazing! Science is fluid! Science can be flawed. We’ve all seen products come and go, some after decades of use. I am not here to tell anyone what to use or what to think. I share real life experience from actual work not just reading. Our bodies and this planet can take a lot and yet is there an overload point? Are inputs considered drugs? If so in what scenario would we prescribe a cocktail of drugs to fix an issue? Farmers and ranchers worldwide have many common goals. To raise food and fiber for everyone, to be able to do this work year after year. We count on others to figure things out that make it easier or more efficient. Imho I believe much of this is going to be changing due to the work of new technology such as the robotics for weeds. Not sure what’s coming on the insect side other than they seem to want us to eat them! lol going to have to pass on that.

Many foods we eat today were selectively bred, like Gregor Mendel's pea plants in the 19th century. GMOs use modern biotechnology to achieve similar results faster and more precisely, introducing specific genes or modifying existing ones for desired traits. 🌾 Genetically Modified Organisms: A Hot-Button Topic GMOs can increase food production, improve nutrition, and enhance pest resistance. However, concerns include safety, environmental impact, and corporate control. 🌽 Gene Transfer Concerns Resistance Transfer: Bt toxin in GMO plants could transfer to wild plants, affecting beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings. 🐞 Disruption of Food Chains: Herbicide-resistant GMOs might disrupt food chains by affecting weeds that beneficial insects rely on. 🌿🦋 Using Science Responsibly Science is a tool; GMO technology isn't inherently bad. The Influence of Genetic Engineering on Agricultural Supply Chains Genetic engineering in agriculture is revolutionizing global supply chains, offering benefits such as increased crop yields, pest resistance, and resilience to extreme weather. These genetically modified (GM) crops can streamline agricultural supply chains by reducing losses and enhancing productivity, leading to more stable food supplies and potentially lower costs. However, this innovation also introduces challenges, including regulatory hurdles, public skepticism, and the need for specialized handling during storage and distribution. These complexities can create logistical bottlenecks and increase costs, especially in regions with strict regulations on GM products. On the downside, genetic engineering in agriculture can lead to supply chain vulnerabilities. For instance, relying on a limited number of GM crop varieties can reduce biodiversity, making entire supply chains more susceptible to diseases or pests that could wipe out these crops. Additionally, the global trade of GM products often faces significant regulatory barriers, causing delays and complications in cross-border transactions.
