This is truly great news for our research institute: The Research Foundation Flanders - FWO is investing €3.7 million in climate research conducted by #AnaEE-Flanders, a research consortium of Hasselt University and the University of Antwerp, under the leadership of our Centre for Environmental Sciences (CMK) professor Nadia Soudzilovskaia. This funding officially recognizes our #Ecotron in Maasmechelen as a European research infrastructure, which opens the door for Belgium to join the European AnaEE-ERIC research consortium and provides important funding for running the facility in the coming years. This is a significant boost for our top research on monitoring and adapting to climate change - and an important recognition for our university. Many congratulations to the team, well done! Read more here: https://lnkd.in/evrZdbga This grant comes on top of an earlier grant in 2024 from VLAIO - Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship (EFRO), Hasselt University, and Edaphon, that enables eight Rapid Assessment Units to be installed in the Ecotron facility. These are new smaller-scale climate-controlled domes where we can expose ecosystems to various environmental change phenomena or different types of soil improvers, for several weeks or months. This allows us to expand beyond our long-term research, which is conducted over multiple years in the larger Ecotron domes, into research that provides answers to questions from our stakeholders in our province and beyond that do not require long-term experiments. On December 12th, 2024, Eco-Ready proudly participated in the Landscapes Across the Mediterranean (CrossMED) conference in Reggio, Italy. This key event addresses sustainable development and conservation challenges across Mediterranean cultural and natural landscapes. Professor E. Tsakiridou presented the Eco-Ready paper titled: "A Comparative Assessment of Societal Awareness on Climate Change, Food Security, and Biodiversity Between the Mediterranean and the Rest of Europe." Co-authored by K. Mattas, N. Syndoukas, F. Anastasiadis, and I. Manikas, this research reveals important regional perspectives on climate resilience, sustainable food systems, and biodiversity preservation—all central to Eco-Ready's mission. The CrossMED conference brings together experts from various fields to share innovative solutions that balance conservation with development. Eco-Ready's work emphasizes the need to connect public awareness with policy action for sustainable landscapes across Europe and the Mediterranean. The international environmental event returns to Vilnius 🧪 The 24th biennial conference, EcoBalt2025, will be held in the vibrant capital of Lithuania on 8-10 October. Continuing a longstanding tradition, the conference will bring together scientific researchers, students, and industry leaders from across the Baltic States, neighbouring regions, and European countries to present and discuss pressing environmental issues. This year, the conference will emphasize ecological issues, focusing on topics such as microplastics and analytical methods for monitoring of antimicrobial contaminants. It aims to create a platform for fostering discussions on sustainable practices, ecosystem preservation, and innovative solutions for a greener future. It will also highlight the importance of risk assessment in addressing pressing environmental challenges and advancing strategies to protect our natural resources, biodiversity preservation, and human health.
